TrialsMan Dan
I got my first trials bike about 6 months ago thinking that stock is the way to go and mod was for pussys. Now i think im regretting that. Whilst my ridings improving (i just sidehopped up a 1ft ish wall, not bad but not great) im kinda struggling with taps and hook ups. Should i have started on mod in the first place, or is it just practice? Seen as im only 14, mod would of been a good idea but i didnt like the look of them when i started. Im thinking about getting rid of my stock soon anyway, next bike will no doubt be a mod. Please help me, im in a state of confusion about what to do next.Dan Edited November 3, 2008 by TrialsMan Dan
ben_travis
Stick with stock - you will soon pick it up! I believe alot of people ride mod because they are lighter / easier to throw around and when they get on stock generally cant go as big / far / spin as much / depending on what type of riding you are into!I love my stock, always ridden stock, its the way forward! Just keep riding it and you will get used to it .
bikeperson45
I ask this myself sometimes.Stick with stock.
Ali C
I recken you teach yourself better core skills when learning on a stock. Nothing like a bigger and heavier bike to teach you how to use your body weight and technique to move it around!
Dan81
I like stock as it looks more like a 'normal' bike...so its more suprising for people to see you clear a big gap or whatever
EchoSam
I have ridden both mod and stock i have swithed a few times aswell. But i always ended back on a stock i can do every move easier and go bigger on a stock..I only thing i find wrong with stock is that if you stop riding for a few months its harder to get use to again unlike mod its so light and easy to chuck around its like you never got of the bike.STOCK IS THE WAY FORWARD!Tom
bigamac
I ride mod. Never tried stock. I want to. And then buy one, but its money lol. I ride a t-bird so is heavy bike. So i think i would be able to ride stock. To be honest i advise stick with stock. Although more possibilty's with mod.
Greetings
Stocks are generally easier to ride, I'm not sure if they're easier to learn the basics on.To put it simple (in my opinion of course) most people can ride stock bikes well, but only a small bunch of riders can ride a mod properly. By properly I don't mean just doing a big sidehop but generally making use of the small wheels - something like this for example.I find mods a nightmare to ride, they're great fun but if you want to go big, it's not necessarily the better choice. Stay with a stock, 6 months isn't long enough to make such a choice.

sstein
Stick with stock, it will be harder to learn on, but if you ridea stock well, you will be able to pick up riding a mod easier, however it will be a lot harder the other way around. Its harder to learn things and ride well on a full suss than a hardtail. Thanks for the advice guys, i'll stick with stock.
Tom_
The mtb "myth" is a very valid one I think, and not like this atall. The theory behind the mtb thing is that by riding a full sus your letting the bike work for you, you dont learn how to handle the bike through the terain properly, absorbing bumps, and choosing more suitable lines. A full sus will just plow through it all. I would agree that a HT will make your bike handling skills better.Mod/Stock is alot down to personal preference really, and what you start out on. around here, there were 3 of us that rode mod back in the old days. This time last year we were all three on stock, now two are still on stock (although I havnt ridden in AGES) and one has gone back to mod because to be honest he suited it much better and generally rode it better. I think that you can tell, almost straight away which you prefer, simply by having a go on other peoples mods/stocks.I prefer stock, as I find it more stable, and I find the generally larger bike makes things seem smaller, and therefore scare me alot less. pietro
I've only been riding for a year and I'm no expert. I initially bought a stock but found I was progressing slowly. I then bought a mod and have been learning faster.I now occasionally switch from mod to stock and I can do everything that I do on my mod also on the stock. However the stock feels heavier and more difficult to throw around but I guess it's just a case of getting used to it.What I find interesting is that whenever I go back to mod after riding stock I find my style more precise... Also my balance on two wheels is better on the stock.Anyway, on the whole, for the time being, I prefer mod.... but I'm just a beginner.
