bikeperson45
Why do my wheels keep buckling? I'm not doing huge stuff, they just keep buckling. I am plain sick of it.
neotropolis
Why do my wheels keep buckling? I'm not doing huge stuff, they just keep buckling. I am plain sick of it.Are your spokes all tight? What rims are you using?
Revolver
Your spokes could be loose, your rim could be rubbish, and your build could also be rubbish.I would imagine your rear wheel is built 3cross though, so it's most likely to be the spoke tension. sstein
Do you do alot of spinny moves?
bikeperson45
Are spinny moves worse? I spin quite a bit.And to make things worse, I've rounded the nipple Know a way I can square it?thanks
Revolver
You can square it by taking it out and replacing ithehe.Other than that, I dunno.

Seeing as wheels are designed to take vertical stress rather than horizontal stress this causes them to buckle. If you use 26 inch wheels they tend to bend very easily aswell. bikeperson45
Can you just replace a spoke nipple? And also, would you say it's okay to use a wrench instead of a spoke key?thanks
shamus
Can you just replace a spoke nipple? And also, would you say it's okay to use a wrench instead of a spoke key?thanksits do-able with a wrench or pliers as a last resort but thats probably why you keep rounding nipples, invest in decent spoke key (i'm using a park triangular one (3 different sizes)) and replace your spokes/ nipples, then use the key and you shouldn't round them off:)and yes you could replace just a nipple (best to do whole spoke but...) just whip tyre and rim tape off, then you can use a screwdriver in the nipple and take it off, then wang a new one onto it (if the spoke threads are ok) and check your wheel tension and you should be fine. ti-mig-guy
How do you check wheel tension?
shamus
grab two spokes just above the cross over points and squeeze, the tension and movement should be the same around the wheel and on either side. there is normally very little movement on a properly built wheel but some movement is not fine as long as its an even amount all the way roundanother method if you have a fine ear is to 'ping' the spokes and listen to the note then you can just 'tune' the wheel in a similar way to an instrument
Dan81
if you have a fine ear is to 'ping' the spokes and listen to the note then you can just 'tune' the wheel in a similar way to an instrument so you can tell if its a bit flat? shamus
well yeah a duller note then the surrounding spokes would indicate a looser spoke, so thsi would need to be remediedin the wiki i think there is a guide to wheel building, or just google it there are loads out there with step by step guides. thats the best shout i reckon
Revolver
What if the wheel's buckled though?Surely then if you tuned the spokes, it wouldn't fix the buckle?
