J Trials 31
Anyone know what's wrong. I had to with my 05 maggie and I threw on my old HS11 and it's the same way. Very costly it seems.
Gandalf the Yellow
have you tried buying a new brake?i've been riding trials for 4 years now (maybe more if non-trials specific bike) and im on my 2nd lever, never had to bleed when on a ride unless i did something silly like ripped my cross over or something..and my first one didn't even break...steve
monkeyseemonkeydo
You're either doing something wrong or your brake has a leak.
Trials Punk
What fluid are you using to bleed it?Airs getting in somewhere, so oil/water/whatever is coming out.Get a mate to hold the lever down hard, whilst you check for any leaks along the lines. Make sure you check inside the lever and the pistons near the pads.
monkeyseemonkeydo
Airs getting in somewhere, so oil/water/whatever is coming out. When Maggies are leaking (even slightly) you usually find dirty areas where the oil traps dust and crap and so helps to indicate where any problems may lie. Trials Punk
Good point.I've never found my maggies ever leaking from the hosing, mostly from the piston inside of the lever.
monkeyseemonkeydo
I used to get a little bit of fluid escaping around the slave cylinder bolts but as you say, the tubes themselves can't really 'weep', only split and leak properly which you'd notice immediately. J Trials 31
Using blood. Can't really tell where it's leaking, but on the older one it may be the lever. Seems it's more wet around there. The newer seems as it's possibly one of the pistons. What do you suppose I do?
Trials Punk
Give it all a good clean inside the lever and around the pistons. Check the areas again, then all I can suggest is to replace what you belive to be leaking. Not sure what else you can do.
J Trials 31
Thanks guys. Looks like that's the best idea. Do you think spraying the soap and water on it will be a good idea? Like you use to find a leak in a tube.
monkeyseemonkeydo
Do you think spraying the soap and water on it will be a good idea? Like you use to find a leak in a tube.Well provided you're not running pneumatic magura's... you'll gain nothing from that . Why do you have to rebleed the brakes? Does the lever feel spongy? What are the symptoms?
J Trials 31
It loses power and is spongy. It will start slipping. Especially if I'm doing rear wheel moves.
monkeyseemonkeydo
To be honest I'd say your best bet would be to get hold of a new HS33 lever. You're definitely letting air in somewhere, most likely due to an old/dodgy seal... Your HS11 lever will feel pretty poo compared with the HS33 one anyway due to the design and spec. J Trials 31
Well I got an 05' maggie and it does the pretty much the same thing. So I probably need two new levers? I'm not so sure it's the lever on the newer one though. It never seems like that, but I have noticed it getting wet around the bottom part around the pads before. weebryan
the only way i can think for checking leaks is to get all the fluid out of the brake, take the break off the bike and stringe loads of air in and dunk the brake under water and watch out for bubbles when operating it. Most likely to be seals or the olives at the end of pipes
steve@banbury-trials
i once had a hairline crack just below the bleed bolt and that caused me grief ,it was a small crack as my brakes leaked ever so slightly and it was hard to find the problem

Will be going dual disc in a short time, so if I don't fix the brake without buying stuff, you can say goodbye to riding until I do go duel disc. PS: Weebryan, give me your XTP, really super sick bike. Always wanted one of those. Especially a short.
grant_hundley
have you tightened all the bolts and fittings up properly?

Just got to get everything together. Yeah, would love to have either of those. A duel disc DOB would be neat too. XTP though is just one my all time favorites. J Trials 31
just edited my avatar with my dob picsLooks good, but I still like the XTP better. If the DOB were a duel disc, it would be so much nicer. Used your trick and found that the HS11 lever and one of the pistons on the other brake were junk. Pieced together a brake and we'll see if that will hold.
