Zoo! Baby Pitbull 2004

Hey,

So, I've been this up for a few weeks now. Deciding that I can't really live without the leverage of a Python's stays! Hence swapping a spanking new GU ST 20" disc frame (from China! :)) with Craig for this old legend. Had to get the headtube faced and reamed a bit for the headset to fit, and finally just yesterday my package of long bolts and washers came from Stagonset, so got the booster on... and it feels MUCH better! Stiffer, more responsive and it bites and grabs better.

Just click the tab to view the full-res 100% jobbie, worth it!

Spec for those interested:

-Zoo! Python prototype (bashless 04)

-Echo Team CNC fork

-Echo disc wheels 07/08 rims and 08 hubs

-Zoo! CNC ISIS cranks

-GU halfring cut down by CLS

-Tensile freewheel

-Try-All rear tyre

-Maxxis CC front tyre

-Echo 4-bolt booster

-Zoo! Original brake pads

-Avid BB7 160mm front 08 with Hope Saw rotor

-Trialtech 180x40 stem

-Zoo! Original high-rise handlebars

-Tensile headset

-Magura HS33 2004

The anodized sidewalls are very very good for braking. Shockingly good especially with these Zoo! pads. But obviously when it gets wet... >_<

Feel free to leave any comments! :)

looks prett ynice. How does the bash perform at the angle?

I have yet to test it out, as I'm not much of a 'basher'. But, I think it'll be fine; the bottom is protected enough, and with a bit of chain slack, it's no prob.

I just found that it spun a bit when the Tensile tightened further onto the crankarm whilst pedalling

For those wondering where the B-Pitbull got its scars from, here you go:

and so on so on so on. Man, just watching all those old Zoo vids and 04 CLS clips just makes me wonder how a heap of aluminium can just take such a beating for so long and still refuse to quit? Yet you see all the modern frames just diving for the grave within 7 months?

Pretty amazing stuff

Gratz mi Deng!

I'm in half a mind to remove the freewheel and readjust the position of the halfring, as I'm not too happy about how it protected on a few slipped sidehops.

Other than that, all's dandy, just need to try and re-bed the front brake a bit, hopefully the boiling worked! :)

That frame was ridden in ZOO Videos 16, 18, 19, 21 and 23. Plus this.. 04, plus all the days, nights and weekends of riding I never filmed, Nass 04 too. Abdab rode it about two years ago for a good few months as well as this year for a month or so, Munks rode it last year for about 4 months, I rode it again early this year for 3 months.

It's been thrown off, up and over walls when I've been pissed off and clamped in a vice more times than I can remember to smack the headset in and out.

Its a slag and loves to be abused! Don't be a pussy with it Spunge.

As with most Pythons I've ridden: awesome leverage for gaps and sidehops. Awesome leverage which no other bike I've ridden has given! But at a cost... no flicky feeling when pulling up the front end into a manual or bunnyhop (even with a 20mm spacer and 180x40 stem! :P). Damn! Unless anyone's got any ideas how to get it to be able to pull up flickily? Ultra-rise bars of some sort? haha..

here it is again!

is that the actual python that CLS rode in those old zoo vids? Id have thought it be dead by now, obviously not. How much different is it to a normal 04 python? looks liek the geo is a bit shorter at the front and that booster looks pretty unique compared to every single other 04/05/06 python ive seen. did you grind the bashguard mounts off or did it come like that?

lol i thought the python in the 'classic retro 2004 python' topic by danny kearns was the actual 'proto' that cls rode...

impressive how long its lasted. considering how frames like that MBK mod died in like 2 months

Yeah it's the real thing; very very abused and the downtube is a warzone. Chainstays aren't dented though, but I guess they are pretty thick after all. Yeah the geo was really bizarre at first, since the front end wasn't all that long, and the back end is a shade shorter than production pythons. Felt a tiny bit small for a Python at first, but now it's fine. Very very controlled feeling but there is that major downside of it handling like a barge. Streety stuff just isn't gonna happen comfortably, even if I'm using a huge stem.

The booster is a little alternative yes! Fairly eagle-eyed observation there. The end of it has a little cut out, whilst the front pointing bit isn't stuck against the toptube, there is a little gap. Bashguard mounts were never on it to start with since it was a prototype. I believe that this was the proto for which Deng was experimenting to see how a mod handled no-bashplates. Hence the release of the first properly-designed-in-mind bashless mod, the 2005 Python. This frame here lacks the bash nub on the right chainstay yoke though.. It's also got old-style toptube cable guides with two opposite facing prongs, so I don't need hose clips; twas convenient.

I am impressed how long it's lasted too, and I plan to be riding this for a while. Geometry feels spot-on for standard traditional trials moves; but yeah, manuals and bunnyhops aren't too nice, as there isn't a 'flick' when you pull the front wheel up from just rolling.
