Lacing Patterns, Whats The Difference?

Hi there,

I recently built a mod 20" wheel today and built both sides 3 cross but when I had finished one flange was directly in the middle of the the rim straight down the centre and the other flange was way further out as if the spokes were too long, someone suggested to me to build one side 2 cross so I did and it worked fine.

So, my question is what is the difference between radial, 2 cross, 3 cross (and I've heard of 4 cross) lacing patterns, are some stronger because of the amount of spokes they overlap?

Also why would one side need to be built 3 cross and the other 2 cross why not make spokes certain lengths so both could be 3 cross or both 2 cross?

they dont.

the more crosses it has the longer the spokes have to be, so with the 3cross, you were just taking up the slack pretty much

Ah now I understand, so by lacing it 3 cross I was effectively making the spokes to short which was bringing the hub flange closer to the centre of the rim, which is why when I built it 2 cross it was fine.

I guess I was blatantly missing something after all then, thanks for straightening it out for me.

Often a hub designed for a disc, freehub or similar will need to be 'dished' to one side a bit so as to keep the wheel central despite the fact the flanges may not be. This can obviously lead to different spoke lengths on each side of the hub. When you then consider that wheels with a disc or drivetrain will then undergo greater forces than those without, you start to see the need for adding some strength where you can. Adding more crossing points to the lacing pattern of a wheelbuild adds lateral stiffness which helps to combat these extra stresses

Less intersections (even going so far as radial lacing) allows you to use shorter and therefore lighter spokes, so if you can get away with it many people will run a radial front wheel or less crosses on the non-drive/disc side where appropriate.

If you're building using the wrong spokes, adding or removing a cross from the lacing can help fine tune things a bit to get them to work

However, if you're a bit of a basher it would be worth going for 3x (or even 4x) to keep things a little more bombproof!
