Deng Headsets

My friend has one on his Zona Zip frame, and it clicks with every turn of the bars.

I don't know why, and I've had my mechanic replace the bearings, check the headset, frame and forks, yet still don't know why it does it.

Apparently it happens with all Zona Zips.

It still works, I'm just sure that some people wouldn't want to hear an audiable click.

If you've got a Zona Zip that is something to bear in mind.

My buddy has an Adamant A3 and the exact same thing happens (with a deng headset). It's pretty loud too, but it seems to function properly at least.

The quality of the bearings used in deng headsets seem to vary. They're all cheap chinese-made units, but from what I've seen, there are some good and bad batches (perhaps?)

The old Echo headsets (I'm talking 3-4 years ago maybe) were uniformly shite. However, although there have definitely been some really poor deng headsets recently too, a few people I know run them now with no problems whatsoever.

I think whether you get a good one or not is pretty much luck of the draw.

Personally, I just bought a Ritchey WCS headset from chainreaction for £29.99, reduce from £52 I believe. Looks like a nice unit, and I've never experienced problems with Ritchey headsets in the past.

Without a doubt, the best headset I have ever used is a hope. I bought it new in 2004 for my xc bike. It never needed servicing and was still in perfect condition when I sold it last year. I think it must have been fitted in 7 frames in that period, including two bmxs and 3 trials bikes.

Deng headsets tend to be very sturdy. I like them personally. I only advise people to install them properly. Wacking it with a hammer/mallet will guarandamnteed cripple the bearings, even if it doesn't seem like it at first.

The bearings are Japanese, as are most of Deng's bearing products now. If they break, then oh well, replace them. New cartridges cost from 3 to 10 pounds. Not much. Also consider problems Profile and Hope hubs have too.... their bearings blow a fair bit too. Even the 'mighty' King hubs' bearings sometimes go poop.

Nothing's perfect, but if it weren't for Tensile and King, Deng'd be my choice headset. Other brands I can't stand.

This sounds a lot like cable bang. Loads of people get it and everyone thinks it is the headset. Cable tie the rear break hose to the headtube just above the lower cup so that it can't move when the bars are turned and this sound should either stop or get a lot quieter.
