Dan81
Hi everyone,Not even been on my bike in about 4 1/2 years but me and my mate were talking about when we used to ride and have so much fun and decided to have another go.....problem is are bikes were a few years old then so now they're museum pieces. Trials has moved on and I got left behind!....theres so much more trials stuff and new brands now Im totally lost so need advice on some parts (help here really appreciated).Brake pads. - I've got the old yellow HS33's with standard black pads. I want something that will still work in the wet but not burn out in a few weeks. I find the back one grippy enough but the front one lacks any 'feel' - there used to be just black magura (rubbish) or red magura (better), now theres loads so what do I get?Shifter/rear mech/cassette. rear mech and shifter dont do anything so need to replace but haven't got a clue. About the time I stopped riding people only just started using road mechs and cassettes. For those old enough to know what this is - its a shimano 'silent clutch' rear hub (hope one always broke!) (crap pick up but at the time it was the only thing we would find that didnt slip or break)...so what cassette/mech/shifter should I get on a reasonable budget? I've seen a 6 speed trials cassette and trials mech on TartyBikes - any good? Can I just use any shifter with these? Im not bothered about how many gears (I think its a stardard mountain bike XT cassette on there now) just dunno what to get?So, anyway...try not to laugh at me too much, Im trying to get up to speed! Really need some advice what to buy (and any recommendations on what shops/links)......if it goes well I'll look at frames etc but at the mo just lookin forward to riding again! HS33's are still regarded as good but Discs are starting to take over. I'm sure someone can recommend some decent pads but i've never had a problem with normal black pads. Forget about rear shifters, it's all single speed now to be honest. But oldschoolies like me still use a rear mech for tension just out of interest what bike do you have ? If I were you i'd stick to old school, modern trials is going to fall out of bed soon so it's best to be ready with a nice un offensive old school rig
Dan81
Thanks for the help and nice bike....I can relate to that one - I remember them coming out and those two brothers who rode for Pashley being on blue peter! If I had a pic Id get one up of mine......it'd be like a history lesson. Its saying on this site that for under 15t I need a double wheel tensioner....that right or just to try to get people to buy the more expensive ones? (can't remeber how many teeth my fave gear has anyway)Doesnt it get tiring having no seat? Does no one just sit and pedal to the next spot anymore? Aaron.Tottman
i do miss the old days.nothing wrong with running gears. running a single sprocket is stronger i ripped quite afew cassetts appart. hg-50 cassette has a great range but if you can get hold of an echo cassette it's every ratio.best padds i've used do far are koxx bloxx (broun). been using them for just over 3 months and to even half way yet ( i will ride at least a hour a day.)old skool is basis of any sport!!!!hands down!!! Dan81
First ride today in longer than I thought...last rode in my 2nd year of uni (2002) so today was my first ride in 6 YEARS!Went ok...we started with a little ledge to try remember the basics and get some sense of confidence and balance...then off to some concrete benches, then 'picnic table height' stuff and feeling happy with that we looked at our ruined hands and called it a day. A looooong way still to go but loved it!What ratio gear is normal to use? (gonna order some stuff to go single speed) - I Found using 22t front and 21 at back ok, next is an 18t but I found that too hard to push so what would work a 20t front and 18t back? Pashley26
Haven't got a clue on gearing, I just ride it how it feels good But congrats on the successful ride, we need to get more ex riders back into the sport
