ti-mig-guy
So I took my bike apart to re-grind the rims, and I need a new headset. It's a mod. So I threw the parts up on the scale and was a little shocked. Front wheel and tire= 3.6 lbs rear wheel and tire just over 5lbs, fork with maggies 2.2lbs, and the frame with rear maggies and bb with echo forged cranks 9.8 lbs. The rear wheel seems very heavy, but what do you think. Are these weights reasonable, or not. Where would you start to loose some weight. Thanks Caleb Edited October 9, 2008 by ti-mig-guy
adam 94
What bike is it?
Jitters
Sounds a bit heavy for all of that stuff, not too far off base - but a little heavy. Maybe try a different scale - or better yet a calibrated scale - before you start worrying over the weights you posted. The rear tire and tubes you pick can get pretty heavy. My 20" tire, tube and hub probably weigh pretty close to that, but they're relatively bulletproof. As you replace parts - say like your headset - do the research and get the lightest stuff you can afford or care to put on there.
ti-mig-guy
My bike is a Koza ti mig, I believe it was made in 01 or 02. I am running a maxis creepy on back and a heavyweight tube that was in it when I bought it. I would assume that this would be the place to start logically, with the rear wheel and tire. Would some one please share the weight of there back wheel tire that is considered light, and of course what what set up is. I am going to build a new bike bit by bit, and will be putting the new parts on this frame for now. So I want to buy nice light parts, with my old parts as backup. Because I need to buy all parts, I figure I would buy the things that may help me first. So any suggestions would be appreciated.

Rusevelt
Any idea how much your bike weighs approximately (kgs/lbs)? it can't weigh more 12-13kgs surely.

ti-mig-guy
My bike complete, after finding a proper scale, is 18.3 lbshe frame with BB and echo cranks and triple traps was 8.3 lbs- how is this for a titanium frame? The front wheel came in at 789 grams (no tire or tube). It is a no name wheel, with a king hubThe rear wheel, also no name, came in at 488 grams (no tire or tube) generic bmx hub sealedI'm thinking the front fork at 510 grams, with Maggie's and mounts is as good as it gets, and it's also TiThe bars with neck are 1011 grams, brisa elite bars and a unmarked stemSo what suggestions do you have now? Thanks
Rusevelt
None! just ride the hell outta it everyday when you can, and you'll gradually build up muscle strength each week. the bike will feel like nothing after a few weeks of riding it. At 18lbs plus, your bike is more than light enough.
ti-mig-guy
OK I have been riding it at least 3 days per week for the last 6 months. I am not complaining about the weight, but want to build a new bike bit by bit, and keep this one as a guest bike....

forteh
My entire stock bike weighs 8.88kg (19.5lbs) at its current lightest.Off the top of my head the front wheel/tyre is 1kg, the rear is 1.8kg and the frame/forks/brakes etc comes to 6-7kg I think.I found the biggest weight savers were the mgti pedals and the titanium BB, taking the dual ply maxxis off and going to a narrower rim saved 650g off the rear wheel
Kieran24
18 lbs is hella light, mines 25 lbs and feels too light sometimes as I come from a BMX background riding a 28 lb bike.

ti-mig-guy
IC, well then perhaps I should not do anything for a while. Thanks for the responses everyone. CalebOh, and I noticed my front for has plenty of room for a 24" wheel and a disk tab so that is rolling around in my head.

CalebOh, and I noticed my front for has plenty of room for a 24" wheel and a disk tab so that is rolling around in my head.Is there any other thought behind this, or is it just one of those things you do because you can? If you do go ahead with it you'd need a new stem with a lower rise, you'd be buying two different sizes of tubes and tires which is just awkward, the wheel would be weaker and heavier than a 20" equivalent, you'd have a super high bb rise and it would look pretty stupid. By all means try it out just for the hell of it if you have a spare wheel laying about, but don't pour money into something that won't be worthwhile. By all means try it out just for the hell of it if you have a spare wheel laying about, but don't pour money into something that won't be worthwhile.I am under the impression that it would make it easier to roll up things, like a stock bike is, would raise my BB like you said, and would raise my front end. I was considering a set of riser bars to get the front end up a bit, but this 24 idea would fix that issue as well. I figured out how to use some v brake to magi adapters, so I don't need to buy a disk to try it out. Was thinking I would look in the local shops for a cheap 24 front wheel and tire this weekend, and give it a go. Pretty sure this would make it feel like it has a longer wheel base, and more angle on the fork, and that should be nice.
