How To?

Exactly what I thought. :S

Anyway, I wouldn't suggest stretching the spring in Kings, otherwise you'll mess up the diameter of it and it might be a bit dodgy under tension.

If you're still running the original thick white king lube, you could replace it with something else like finish line.

You will need a tool and yes it does cost a fair whack.

That's about it.

You can clean out the old grease with a thorough spray of gt85 and relube it with finishline wet lube, the hub should be a bit louder but still nothing on a proII.

Take the axle out, pull the drive shell out and clean all the helical splines with a toothbrush and gt85. Because I havent got the king tool I just sprayed a load into the driveshell to clean the crap out, seemed to work ok. Relube the spline with finishline wet and pop it back in, make sure the ringdrive system works as you would expect it. Put the axle back in and jobs a good un :)

If youre really desperate for a noisy hub then you can stretch the sping, probably not advisable though as it will be more prone to failure. Failing that get a piece of plastic and peg it to the chainstays so it pings your spokes :D

ever seen my king fail? ;)

Aha!

I didnt say it WILL fail, it will be more prone to failure ;)

Basically stretching the spring is taking the material past its yield point and producing plastic deformation, after which further loading will work harden the material until it reaches its ultimate tensile strength, at which point it suddenly goes weak and snaps :D

To be honest its probably not going to snap unless you keep stretching it all the time, but if it aint broke dont fix it till it is :)

True. I had a King Classic with a stretched spring for about 4 years and never encountered any major problems in general - however it did skip badly on rare occasions (probably due to lack of maintenance) and as a result lead to a nasty crash. Since then I have gone with Hope hubs purely because of confidence reasons.

You don't necessarily need a hub tool to remove the internals either but you will run the risk of damaging the internals if it is not done correctly.

Ive never used the tool and ive serviced both my kings loads of times and never had them skip on me.

just take out the axel and then from the none drive side stick an allen key in and hit the spring catch plate untill it all falls out pretty much, stretch the spring abit and put it all back together, ive never used grease or oil or whatever and never had one die on me, mines always been pretty loud aswell.

6, kick, open hubsell.

7, land on teeth.

8, wish you kept the king.

LOL

:giggle: should leave the king how you got it as streching the springs etc... it will brake, or make it skip

Why do you want a loud hub (don't mean poo oh i got a louder hub than you  )

surely if it work's mint then leave it it alone

Don't modify the internals.

It's a better idea to try to clean it as best as possible inside, and remove as much lube as possible. This will make the hub louder, but wont be lubricated as well. I ran mine pretty dry for a long time, and it was quite loud. I've since lubed it, toned it down by about 60% in sound...I can't hear it over my music now. lol Best hubs on the market though.

Or do you work for chris king etc.. or your just chatin shite!! All i mean is why change it if it works well, just cos you want it lounder hub.

I bet most kings that go bang is because peps have streched the springs etc... is all i saying.

why would you want a loud hub?

indeed - why the f**k .

the click is metal on metal - make it louder you have quicker wear. Stretch the spring and things can go wrong. Run it dry and things can go wrong etc ....

ffs why do people want them loud anyway - why is loud associated with working well ? its the same with f**king brakes - "aww mate what pads u runnin your brake sounds mint innit"

TOPIC SHOULD BE - HOW CAN I MAKE MY KING WORK BETTER - A. MAINTAIN IT BETTER
