Al_Fel
Why don't you just take the spring out of a rear mech?
Muel
Because it wouldn't be anywhere near strong/stiff enough.
Al_Fel
Because it wouldn't be anywhere near strong/stiff enough. Its does the exact same thing?
JonMack
I think he means incase you land on it.
Muel
No, I meant the spring wouldn't be stiff enough, so it wouldn't give enough tension.
Al_Fel
I don't think we're talking about the same spring lol. I'm talking about the one that puts the tension in the chain. Not the one where you bolt it on, Nor the one you can usually see.
Muel
Yeh I knew the one, I just don't reckon it'd be strong enough, (I've got a Deore mech here, it's a bit pansy-ish).With a shorter cage though, there'd be a smaller leverage so effectively the tensioner would give more tension. I think.
Ash-Kennard
it would be plenty strong enough muel
Muel
I'm just going off what I've got here, my Deore mech has nowhere near as much tension before it bottoms out as my Surley tensioner, and my Surley slaps quite a bit. forteh
Ive run a deore mech as a tensioner before and had no problems with it, my hacksawblade tensioner is better though
Elliot
decent jockey wheels with proper bearings like the ones used in rohloffs?KCNC do some pretty cool jockey wheels. Alloy cnc'd with proper bearings (I think). Sold by Clee Valley Cycles or look em up on eBay. They also come in some sexy anodized colours if your into that sort of thing. basher
Cheers for the jockey wheels I dont want to use a spring from a derailleur, want something stronger to give tension on par with a rohloff.
toyota200x
A homemade Rohloff would be great to see.
basher
Im thinking of doing one with an incorporated mech hanger in it so to get round the obvious problem of snaping hangers.I need these dimensions though. Anyone please.
Muel
Make it bolt on through the hub bolt, it's the best sytem.
basher
Make it bolt on through the hub bolt, it's the best sytem. First idea was to just make it like a rohloff, second was to take my hanger off and trace that almost so i could slot it into where the hanger would go, although would be good not very universal between frames.so yeah final idea is to just have it attach like a fixed tension through the hub bolt and hanger bolt.Really need some one to get me these dimensions though so i can start a cad drawing of it. Muel
I'll measure up my Surley for you if you want? The arms a lot longer than a Rohloff though.

r2wtrials
right... can't find my vernier but a quick measurement shows.. A=50mm, B=45mm and plate thickness is 5mmgive or take a couple of mm the same as above Edited September 30, 2008 by r2wtrials
Matthew_Gibson
One I made! If you sidehop and fail, 8mm spanner, push down, tighten up. Sorted!
RobinJI
if the spring in a rear mech isn't strong enough just cut a coil or 2 off, pretty simple engineering really
