Tensile Skippage

Got a Tensile freewheel a week or so ago. Just ridden it 3 times and today it started skipping on me. What's up with that?! Normal behaviour? If so I'm going to hurt somebody...real bad, the guys at Tensile to be exact.

Not skipping when doing anything trialsy, just when like rolling backwards and just resisting the movement slightly or just pedaling along. I've noticed King's behave the same way but they're a totally different construction so it just doesn't make any sense...

Should I send it back to the shop basically? (Bought from everybody's favourite shop... Ta...bi....c...k)

Why did I stray away from the path of normal hubs... Though, I did kill my White Industries hub... in 3 years, but still.

Its a serviceable freewheel, I assume from your experience you know how the freewheel system works, open it up check that all pawls are able to spring back properly and the freewheel is free from any defects/impurities which could cause it to skip.

It may only be a small job of re-greasing it as Muel said, or a manufacturing defect, you won't know unless you check it.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll have to take it apart then... Gonna ride it a couple of more days... Sometimes parts mend themselves. If problems persists, take it apart and do the normal procedure I do with freehubs (you know Hope, White, ShitmaNo etc.)... all grease out -> teflon oil in. Works like a charm every time.

Why, oh why, was I adviced not to do that with this freewheel...

just ride it round normally for a while and try not to do much trialsy stuff on it, dont put it under too much strain

cleaning out would help too, i havent used a tensile before so im just guessing by my knowledge of hopes/kings :P

Muel: Hehe, well... I thought he was a reliable source... I guess the only reliable source is my own common sense which told me to clean all the grease out and go with some light oil instead...

Buying some new lockring pliers today so I can take it apart. (And a new ISIS crank extractor, the old one apparently was cross-threaded... wtf?! :P)

Always sucks taking new kit apart to make it work. Why can't manufacturers be arsed to get it right from the beginning?! (Don't get me started on Fox suspension...)

Btw. the tensile lockring is left hand threaded, right?

Freewheels that are new might skip because they've not bedded in yet.

Just leave it to bed in for a while :)

There is a lot of grease in there when it is new for a reason - by using the freewheel, the grease is pushed out of the areas where there is too much, leaving the correct amount in place... meaning the freewheel will last longer than if you just rip all the grease out.

Right as we are on the topic about ffw, if i take all the greace out of my rear hub will it effect it ? i want it abit louder.

Yeah it will make it louder, but more likely to wear out quicker. The sounds comes from the pawl clicking into place after going over a tooth in the racket. So grease acts like a cusion in making it quieter. Also the reason why more expensive freewheels are louder because the spring is stronger so the pawl fires back harder making a louder noise.

Thanks Adam.

My experience is from hubs only. And there I've always taken all the grease out and put light oil in... And after 3 years of bashing the only thing that's working as it should on my White hub (longest lasting) is the freewheel mechanism.

Maybe these freewheels are a different story. I'll put my teeth in your hands and hope you're right about this. If not... well plane tickets to the UK aren't that expensive... And I've got people to see all around the country so it could be a nice trip. ;)

(No no, not a serious threat! I'm a nice guy!)
