Just thought I'd put this up on here seeing as it might interest some people.

Went to an art exhibition/installation thing today called 'Seizure', by Roger Hiorns. It's based in London, near Elephant and Castle.

Southwark Council were demolishing a low-rise block of flats, but before they're totally demolished, Roger Hiorns was commissioned to create an art installation/exhibit inside the flats. What he chose to do was to empty the flat of all it's furniture, carpet, etc., then totally seal it off and fill it with copper sulphate. He left it like that for 2 and a half weeks, as the solution cooled and allowed 'cooling crystalisation' to take place. They then re-opened the flat, and were left with this:

This is the main living area.

This is the bathroom/shower room.

When you go there, you get given some thick gloves and some wellie boots, then you can just cruise around this flat and check it all out. It's totally free to enter/go around/do whatever.

This obviously isn't going to be for everyone, but yeah, if you're around London and you're bored, it's well worth checking out.

If I had a scanner, I'd scan the catalogue for it 'cos they have Rob Hiorns "In conversation" with the director of ArtAngel and he explains the reasoning, technique, and so on. It's pretty nuts - he'd never done anything this big, so they didn't know if, after the 2 1/2 weeks were up, they'd have a room full of silt or sweet crystalisation. Danger!
