Can Anyone Help Me Out?

I've just started using sony vegas 8.0. Whenever I try to drag one of my video clips into the timeline it only recognises it as audio.

Has anyone else had this problem?

If so can you help me to change my clips to the right format.

*what format should my video clips be in?

Thanks.

Never used this program before but I'm guessing its an unsupported video format and so only the sound is coming through.

What is the original format of the video and have you tried changing it (may sacrifice quality though!) or downloading a codec for Vegas of your required format?

And a quick google search shows a mass of results ;) Might be worth a read through...

Try wmv or avi, what are you currently working in?

There is an application called G-Spot which details which codecs are required.

Failing that, try reinstalling SV or update/reinstall your current codecs.

Mine all open in media player so i'm assuming that's .wmv

but I'm a computer newbie and don't have a clue what i'm doing. All I want to do is know what format they should be in and how to change them. Thanks for helping me out anyway mate.

What type of files are you trying to open; ones that are already on your PC or captured footage from a camera? If its that latter then something's seriously pissed up, as Vegas (I use 6.0) automatically captures stuff in the right format to play it. But basically it should be a quite large sized avi file.

I'm trying to open files that I have transferred from my camera to my PC. They are only about 30 seconds long each.

Vegas does do a ton of file types, so I wouldn't think a file type created by a camera to be imported would be any different.

It may be what your camera does to the files, what kind of camera is it?

I've downloaded videos from Youtube, tried importing them into Vegas and get only video (I get an audio clip, but its just a straight line, rather than your usual pitched sound wave).

When you import the clips does it come up with just a audio track?, or does it come up with both a video and audio track?

Get a screenshot of the clip once it has been imported if you don't get what I'm on about.

It comes up as only an audio track.

But I tried importing video from my old camera and it worked fine.

The camera that i'm using at the moment is a samsung nv3.

That camera uses XviD MPEG4 format for videos, you can download the codec here.

Install it and try again. Sorry, I've never used (or even seen!) this program so my advice is pretty much a stab in the dark. Although usually 99.9% of the time if a video doesn't play its a codec problem.

Might also be worth trying the divx codec.
