The problem is not with the seals, even if you changed them things won't be fine. You have to grind the cylinder and then it might work fine and of course with mineral oil.

what do you mean by grinding the cylinder? p.s. cheers for all the advice so far, you guys are quick on the case :)

Well anyone that opened an Echo brake could tell that it isn't from the seals and it looks like you haven't.

The thing is that because it is idiotic cnc aluminum the water somehow ruins it (yeah I don't have a better word for that) and the cylinder isn't "fresh" anymore (yeah I'm not good with the words). And that's why they leak because they have small scratches which are caused by the water. The Magura ones don't have the same problem because they aren't aluminum only. They have another compound and are a completely different alloy. So grinding it means to make it "fresh" again. You have to use sandpaper (around 1000-1200) so that the cylinder doesn't have the scratches anymore. And if you make this thing one-two-three times you will have to change the seal, because the diameter of the cylinder changes and bla bla bla.

Am I being specific now?

I have heard that the first batch of echo brakes had a problem where the inside of the master cylinder was not cleaned properly after machining, leaving bits of swarf in the brake, they were then filled with oil and when used the master cylinder will pick up the swarf and cause the scratchs in the cylinder, when run with oil there would be only a small leak, but if ran with water because it is thinner it would leak easier.

As has been said, try to smooth out the inside of the cylinder with some very fine wet and dry paper, maybe stick some new O-rings in and see how you go (Y)

Also, can you see where the water is leaking from? Is it actualy the lever?
