ok, i want better components for my pc to play games.

i currently have an amd 64bit 3800+ (dunno if i can overclock this somehow my warrenty has ended ages ago?)

geforce 6600gt

1gb ram.

300gb hdd

i would like to probably upgrade the gx card to a 8600gt/8800gt and ram to 3 or 4 gb, now how easy is this? can i just pull old stuff out and plonk new stuff in and install driver? or is there more?

Any help cheers.

how can i find if its 64 bit? i dont think it is though. so just buy 2 more sticks of 512mb? or buy 2x1gb with more mhz and replace?

You need to find out what speed RAM your motherboard will support. It'll say in the manual, or if you don't have it then go to the manufacturers site and it should be available as a download. Even if it does support super fast stuff (which judging by your other components I doubt) it would still be throttled by the speed of your current RAM anyway.

With graphics cards it should be a straight swap, but beware that if you've got a cheap power supply it might not have enough juice to run it properly.

Regards the 64 bit operating system, I'd be very surprised if it is, not too many people use them and those that do have it for a specific reason. You're unlikely to have a PC with a 64 bit OS unless you asked for it specifically.

Are you on vista or XP?

If XP, it's safe to assume you are on 32 bit.

On Vista go Start --> Computer --> System propeties and there will be a bit saying system type, and that will say whether its 32 or 64 bit.

As for RAM, whichever really, depends if you think you will every upgrade again, as two 512 sticks will be a fair bit cheaper. But so long as you're running pairs, you wont notice a difference between 4*512 or 2*1024.

All you need to make sure is you get RAM with a speed supported by your mobo, an jusding by your specs I'd say that it's would be up to 800mhz.

If you can find out what mobo it is, can give you a definate answer.

RAM is easy as hell, you just plonk it in!

Same with graphics card, depening on which one, although most likely, you will have to install drivers.

Most likely? Most f**king likely? If you had enough of a comprehension on computers you would know that you HAVE to install new drivers when replacing the graphics card. Especially going from a 6 series to an 8 series. If you don't know what your on about don't contribute to a thread asking for technical help.

I would just say double up on ram with another gig dimm, and get a 8600GT, could easily do it for 60 quid or so.

I reckon spending the extra £15 and getting an 8800GT would be far more beneficial for him. Then getting the RAM at either a later date or getting a cheapy 1gb stick off the net for a tenner. You'll be wanting something like a 1gb stick of kingston ddr400 or pny ddr400 (for ultimate cheapness).
