ti-mig-guy
I need to remove my fork to put a new one on, but I have never owned a bike with a mod style fork and stem. I removed the top Allen, and the stem, but the fork doesn't come out. I put a piece of wood on it and whacked it a few, but didn't budge. Is there some kind of lock ring on a thread less headset? It's a FSA headset. Do I need to hit it harder? Doesn't seem right, any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you can find yourself something to fit into the split (flat head screw driver if your careful) and try and 'open' the split a little, it should start to pop out. Once it does verything should come off pretty easy.

aener
Press Alt And F4, Forks Should Just Slide Out, If That Dosent Work Restart.HahahhahahahahaIf we could give reputation points on this forum - I'd give you a hundred, for that.I had this when I was first taking forks out... I thought they'd just slide out after you took the stem off... but yeah.Past experiance says some are stiffer than others, but seriously - just f**king whollop it. forteh
Once youve hit it from the top (with the obligatory piece of wood) then try knocking the forks upwards again, bouncing the front wheel on the ground is normally enough. The wedge ring and top race/bearing retainer should now be sticking proud of the top headset bearing cup and you should be able to ligthly tap the top race off the bottom of the wedge ring. Just twatting it one from the top will only jam the wedge ring further once its started moving up the steerer tube
Fixed Pantsâ„¢
Yeah hitting it might just be making the split top race tighten up and basically make it like hitting a solid sheet of metal (not doing anything) because of the way it wedges down, so try to pry the top cap (logo bit, should have one) off with a flat screwdriver carefully, then getting that off. And underneath you should see the split race and try to pry that up and out but becareful not to warp it.Et viola, easy to slide out forks. ti-mig-guy
So I removed the split wedge ring, and the fork popped out. No whacking of steerer tube required. Would all U that told me to hit it harder not feel like ass holes if I posted up a pic of the fork you encouraged me to ruin. Why would you post the worst advice possible? I thought this was a sight where I could get good advice, and learn about trials, but perhaps I was wrong......And people say Americans are RUDE... Muel
Haha, you dick, you actually do hit it with a hammer, I have never done it any other way.
aener
We did give sound advice... Hitting it really hard is just the easiest way to dislodge the split ring.If you get that off a different way - there's no need to hit it.EDIT: Damn it Muel. Samtrials
I use a rubber mallot to hit it? Works for me.
PaRtZ
So I removed the split wedge ring, and the fork popped out. No whacking of steerer tube required. Would all U that told me to hit it harder not feel like ass holes if I posted up a pic of the fork you encouraged me to ruin. Why would you post the worst advice possible? I thought this was a sight where I could get good advice, and learn about trials, but perhaps I was wrong......And people say Americans are RUDE...FFS so basically there was no need to post this in the end as you decided to go against the wealth of knowledge that is trials-forum and do what you want. Hitting it with a hammer is the way to do it, not only did you get the word from several other long term, well known riders, BUT even Ali C who works at the UK's largest trials warehouse and has been riding longer than I care to thinkFor saying shit like that ^^ you can expect bad advice from now on you arrogant twat
AdamR28
So I removed the split wedge ring, and the fork popped out. No whacking of steerer tube required.Yeah that's right, but you usually need a whack to dislodge the wedge as Flipp said
Ali C
I do like to hit stuff A lot depends on the headset, I know hopes have a really tight rubber seal that can be a git to get off, but cane creek headsets usually allow the fork to fall out with a whack. Infact, I have found 90% of headsets will let the fork come out with a single hard hit. The others (as you have found) need hitting, then a little prying to remove the forks. As much as our advice didn't seem to help, it wasn't bad advice, just this one time it didn't work. (It wouldn't damage anything to hit it as long as you used a soft bit of wood or mallet)

I thought this was a sight where I could get good advice, and learn about trials, but perhaps I was wrong......And people say Americans are RUDE...lol, you ever tried standing on a tin can? takes alot to break, now imagine its your fork, and how much force you would need to crush it...i hit mine, always works if they dont just fall out
ti-mig-guy
I wasn't trying to be an ass, I just wanted to know if this was some kind of joke. I now understand that some need a whack, some do not. I was not sure thats all. No I wasn't trying to go across the bulk of advice, just figured it would not hurt to try to pry the wedge out. I had no idea that there was a wedge, so I would say the advice given concerning it was solid advice. I appreciate all the others chiming in. I always approach a project a little cautiously to prevent ruining shit.
