JumpyJames
I am getting back in to trials after a few years off, but don't know if it is a good idea to ride using a Hope Mono M4 on the rear wheel, as I am fearing that it might snap or break the spokes due to the forces applied to it.Would it be safe to use it for a short time or fine for a long time?Or should I get a magura for the back (as the frame has magura mounts)? J Trials 31
Don't know about those, but hope mono trials are the best on the rear!
Simpson
4 pot really is over kill on the rear. What set up are you planning to be running it on?
JumpyJames
Running on a DMR Trailstar at the moment, it's not going to be super light weight, more of an old school build. It is the only set of breaks I have at the moment, until I find some cash for a rim break. But I don't know if the brake is up to the job for trails. BenLeacockâ„¢
What rim is it james ? Does the frame have vee boses ? If so I might be able to build you a vee up if you get stuck that you could borrow for a while?
JumpyJames
The rim is an X717 i think so, it's not disk specific ) The frame has mountable vee boses, i think I will see how the disk goes for a while, it's fine on the xc bike, but will probably downgrade to vee or magura sometime. Muel
The problem with that brake is it is designed for XC/Downhill, where you don't really want the brake to lock up if you can help it, so they were designed with loads of modulation in mind.By all means try it out, it won't break the spokes though, but if your changing it for another disc, get a Mono Trial. Apparantly BB7s don't work well on the rear.
JumpyJames
Cool, thanks for your advice Muel. Now I have a few options when I get around to upgrading and won't be going for the BB7's. The Mono Trial looks like a good idea, I will see if I like riding trials with disks, if not then i'll be back onto a rim break )
Simpson
Yea as Muel says the M4 will feel pretty hard work compared to an mono trial. Becuase it will have loads of power but could feel rather "spongey" to get it to a locking point. What size rotor are you going to run? If its going to be a fairly heavy build the bigger the better
mike425
I tried an m4 on the back of my bike it was absolute cack! It wouldnt even lock the front wheel let alone the back. Just go with V's thats what I am running now with no problems
JumpyJames
Currently I am running 180mm on the M4, so would look at 160mm to 180mm if using a Mono Trial.I have never used v's for trials riding before, are there any trials specific ones available? There are no trials specic V brakes, genrally use CNC'ed backed trials specific pads, a good slick cable, some nice arms like XTR and a good lever. Some levers have a "tpa" function so you can set them up nice and tight
Muel
If you can fit a 200mm rotor, definately go for one! I have a 180 and it's enough, but you can never have too much brake power, especially in rainy/muddy conditions. My caliper is mounted between the seat stays and the chain stays, so a 180 is the biggest you can get in there unfortunately.
