MadManMike
Thing is, no matter how much they big 'em up, camera phones are always shit.Like the revolutionary Viewty with it's amazing 5mp camera. It's wank.
Muel
It may take pictures with millions of pixels, but it will still be shit at dealing with light levels and all that jazz. It's only got a little lense as well, I don't know much about photogrpahy, but cheap cameras have little lenses, SLRs have big lenses. There must be a reason?
Si-man
The N95 camera is actually bloody good when the lens is clean lol.
Gandalf the Yellow
hmm.do people actually use their full MP on the normal cameras though? cos i don't.i've got the C902 and its OK, 5mp, but look carefully it has shit loads of noise and focuses badly most of the time, so normal digital camera it is.steve
James Quigley
If I could buy a decent phone without a camera on it I would!

Tomm
It's only got a little lense as well, I don't know much about photogrpahy, but cheap cameras have little lenses, SLRs have big lenses. There must be a reason?Yeah, there is. Bigger lenses can be made to a better standard. The small (plastic) lens in a phone is nowhere near as good as on a normal compact camera. Also the sensor is tiny. Cramming loads of megapixels onto a small sensor produces loads of noise and is actually detrimental to image quality. 3MP would be fine, since camera phone photos only ever get seen on a tiny phone screen, or on facebook @ less than 1 megapixel. Plus there are other things with focussing and depth of field that mean larger lenses/cameras are better. The thing is, you can buy decent compact cameras now which are no bigger than a normal mobile phone. Stick a bit of phone circuitry on there and it would make a good camera phone. But people are stupid, and they want tiny phones with tiny cameras in them. And since it's 8 MP, it must be as good as my Canon 30d, right? Dan Campbell
They have been producing 10+mp phones for a while now, just taking a while to land on our shores. Unfortunately, as has been stated in this thread already, obsession with mp doesn't mean good photos. Would be nice when they manage to get it right though, a high quality compact and phone would be useful when I don't/can't take my SLR places. Wrayvon
Whatever you guys say, the K850i is a dam good camera phone for a 5 mega pixel. So this 8.1 (which is what I had already planned on upgrading to when it comes out) is going to also be dam good! Cyber shot lenses are actually really good. For a phone anyway. Billy
I'd rather carry an easel, canvas and set of acrylic paints containing every colour known to man about with me, and just paint all the awesome stuff I see than use the camera in a phone. I wish somebody would make a good phone without a piece of shit camera in them Edited August 28, 2008 by Billy

Endohopper
... And since it's 8 MP, it must be as good as my Canon 30d, right?Smart marketing to mislead uninformed people with big numbers .The Hi Fi industry does the same at the low end - quoting huge RMS power ratings whilst neglecting to pay any attention to the circuitry and components that actually deliver the signal . Mark W
So because it's now 8mp, it means you'll now get an even higher quality photograph of something you just missed because cameraphones are so f**king slow to respond?

Krisboats
Most of the camera phone pictures are taken in clubs or at bars of people with their friends. If someone were to build a decent focusing camera phone with a bit of a flash to it (none of this led shite) and have it with good noise reduction then i'd buy one fo'sho. As it is... i'm far more tempted to buy one of these and no more nails a swivel hinge onto it so i can stick a compact camera to it.

Extreme_biker0
Smart marketing to mislead uninformed people with big numbers .The Hi Fi industry does the same at the low end - quoting huge RMS power ratings whilst neglecting to pay any attention to the circuitry and components that actually deliver the signal .You're a bit mixed up. Cheap hifis quote PMPO (Peak Maximum Power Output) rather than RMS (Root Mean Squared) because it is always a bigger number, although it is RMS that actually matters. That is how the manufacturers of the cheap shit generate the deliberate obfuscation, not generally by simply quoting the RMS power, which is something you'd expect to be quoted. So because it's now 8mp, it means you'll now get an even higher quality photograph of something you just missed because cameraphones are so f**king slow to respond?Erm just like a normal camera, if you know how to use it properly (ie half pressing the button to pre-focus the scene and all the jazz it needs to do) there is no noticable delay.Unless in photogrophy class you are tought like Shoulin monks to train your mind to be faster than modern day electronics, you cannot possibly notice the difference.
