Hope Pro Ii Rear Problem

Recommended Posts

Now in the last month I have broken 5 springs in my rear Hope Pro II. I broke 3, replaced all the springs and pawls, then two weeks later, broke 2 more. When I have opened the freehub body up, everything appears to be fine, no signs of wear, everything was fitted correctly and the pawls were in a fine condition. I've only had the hub 2 maybe 3 months now, and I don't do a massive amount of miles and I don't put huge stresses through the hub.

I have spoken to Hope and they don't really know why this could be happening, so I was wondering if anyone has had a similair problem with another hub or if anyone has any idea why this could be happening?

Cheers guys.

Really weird... is it possible that there has been a slight installation error..? I'm sure you're aware bending the spring will make it weaker, but just to check, they aren't being bent at all during fitting?

I guess its possible, but neither myself or my work collegues could see any problems. And nah I'm not bending them, just popping them into the pawl carrier from the top.

Very wierd indeed, are they the right springs? They're not from a Profile or something?

Maybe there is something going round inside the hub, like a piece of swarf? I'd strip it all down completely and clean it all up, you could have missed something.

Well I thought the same the first time it happend, completly degreased the pawl carrier and the ratchet, made sure there was no loose material. The weird thing is, the first 3 springs snapped after two months of use, and in that time I didn't touch the hub once, which makes me think manufacturing fault somewhere?

Definetly the right springs, first lot taken out of a spare Pro II and other two sent directly from Hope.

I've also just checked the reviews of the pro II spring and pawl spares on CRC, and there are two reviews from owners of the hub saying they have broken springs in their hubs.

Not as a trials bike no, sorry :$

The first time they broke, I used fairly thick grease (I can't remember the name, its blue though) around the ratchet and the freehub. Second time I used some wet chain lube on the ratchet, and a small bit of greast smeared around the pawl carrier.

I'm going to see if it happens again, if it does, I will send the hub back to Hope.

Have you lubed up the carrier hole for the spring and the area where the spring touches the pawl? It's likely to be either in-proper installation (quite hard to get it wrong ;) ) or the spring being over worked, very quickly(in metal terms, when the metal is continuously bent it weakens) which putting grease or lube on the spring might help.

Ah-ha, I think that's where the prob lies... the extra frequency of engagement compared with being on a trials bike rapidly decreases spring life. I know they are sold as an SS hub too, but I have heard of similar issues there.

Maybe try bending the springs 'downwards' a little so the pawls are pressed into the ratchet with a little less force. Do this somewhere along the length of the spring though, not at the tight bend close to the freehub body.

Cheers Adam, I'll give that a try soon.

Although surely if that caused a real problem, then springs breaking would be alot more common with Pro II's?

Yeah that's what I was just thinking... possibly something to do with the extra engagements.

I don't understand what you mean by extra engagments? I have the standard Pro II, not the singlespeed version, and I'm using it on my street/jump bike, not for trials.

Oops, I can't read, just assumed you were on about a Pro II trials! :$ (Since that's what us trials riders often call them instead of using the full name.)

Erm, in that case I would give the spring-tweaking a try, the force they apply to the pawls is HUGE compared with other hubs of similar design, so reducing the force a bit can only help to increase spring life I would have thought!

:)

I'll give it a try.
