george_seamons
If you set the jumper on the back of the hard drive you're putting in to "slave", it should work. Providing the cable interfaces are the same...and you don't already have a slave on that channel.
Tomm
Yes, it should work fine, just plug it in. The jumper on the back of the old drive needs to be on either CS or Slave as George says, but it'll almost certainly be on CS anyway so I doubt you'll have to change it. george_seamons
Just to note, if its on CS (Cable Select) make sure you put it on the second plug down, because the top plug is master.
munkee
or forget the jumper completely and it upon booting it will ask whether u want to load windows 98 or window xp .. so select xp and your good to browse the other.... or just boot the 98 and go back to the old skool ! rocktrials
hmm ok....the old hdd has 3 ports, 1 long with bout 40 pins in or so, and kinda connects half to a lil one with 6/8 pins in, then theres one with 4 big pins in, what do i plug where? and what cable tdo i use? anzo
You need to plug the second plug on the IDE cable (The thin, wide cable that goes to your normal HDD) into the 40 pin socket, and a power supply plug into the 4 pin socket.Look on the back of your XP HDD, it'll be the same set up - assuming its not SATA, which I seriously doubt. - IDE Cable showing Master and Slave, you want the Slave plug. - These are the power supply plugs that run from your PSU, one of these needs to go into your HDD.I'm assuming the 6-8 pins you mentioned are the jumper pins - these should have 1 or 2 little blocks in them. These decide whether or not your hard drive runs as a master or slave - on your hard drive there will be a label detailing where the jumper blocks need to be to perform whatever operation - just match the jumpers up to slave. Then you should be sorted Edited August 20, 2008 by anzo
rocktrials
the only things on the xp hdd is a 5wired cable (im guessing the powersupply) and a small cable going to the motherboard.
anzo
Ah, ok. Thats a SATA cable which you will have then.SATA will always show as the master as its only one drive per channel, so you need to get an IDE cable and plug the hard drive into the slave plug and then into the motherboard. You then need to go into the BIOS screen and alter the boot priority
rocktrials
so ive got the IDE on slave plugged into the hdd, i will plug in a power cable, whats the jumper bit? oh and which port do i stick the 'cpu board' IDE cable in on the motherboard? i can see a blue and black one, blue looks longer. anzo
Ok,On the back of your Win98 drive you should have something that looks like this...These little blocks (shown white in the picture) can be removed and placed in certain way to change how the drive operates (as a master, slave or auto). Now, somewhere on your hard drive you will have a sticker that looks like the one at the top of that photo above. This will detail where the blocks need to be to slave the drive. Arrange the blocks to match the picture. Then you need an IDE Cable (see picture in my previous post) insert the 'slave' plug into the Win98 hard drive (its a 20 pin, fool proofed). Then the other end of the cable needs to be plugged into the IDE socket on the motherboard which looks like this... (the black, green and white sockets). You need to plug the end of the IDE cable into the socket named IDE1 (if it is available, if not go to IDE2 and so on).You then need to find the power supply cable, you will have a couple of these spare running from your PSU (Power Supply Unit) and look like this...Again, these are fool proofed with cut off corners and they plug into the hard drive - you'll see where it needs to go without a doubt You do not need to touch your XP drive. You then need to boot up the computer and press F2 or Delete to get into your BIOS screen. From here you can select the Boot Sequence, you need to prioritize Win98 disc and it'll automatically boot up from this drive. Reprioritize XP disc to get back onto your normal operating system.Though before going through the options of the BIOS, it may be worth just starting up normally and seeing if it gives you the option of which drive to boot from. anzo
Check to make sure the disc is being recognised.Start>Control Panel>Administator Tools>Computer Management>Disc Management (under the Storage subheading).

anzo
Will it let you right click it (in the Disc Management) and click 'Explore'?
rocktrials
no
anzo
Ok, what are the options when you right click? You may just need to assign a Drive letter unless it's given one automatically (assuming E:?) If it doesn't allow this, you can download a file recovery program to gather everything from the disc. I have a free one at home that works well at home, but I can't remember for the life of me what it is called. I'll post again later when I'm home (at work at the minute) with a link to download it.
