David
Hi there, well its about time I upgraded my ram (4GB) but as I am limited using 32 bit xp I wondered if the upgrade to 64 bit would be useful? I use my pc for all the usual things and my uni work involves a lot of C/C++ programming. I think I am right in saying Dev C++ works in 64bit? Anyone use 64 and notice a big difference? Also is it worth just taking the plunge into vista 64?Thanks,Dave
Dr. Nick Riviera
You've got 4gb of ram and aren't already using a 64bit os?I use vista 64, it seems a bit better then regular vista, and having used xp for years, it's a fair sight better in places.as far as programming goes, I'm sure there will be no issues with that. UrbanPoet
It's not 64-bit exclusive, all 32-bit programs work so your normal compiler etc. will work. Or have I missed something?

Danny
I agree with Dr Nick. Ignore all the shite you've heard about vista and actually try it yourself (Just make sure you install sp1). Windows XP 64bit was never release as retail for a reason

Think I might give Vista 64 Ultimate a go then!
Dan6061
What's the actual advantage of 64bit over 32?
Dr. Nick Riviera
it's a bigger number therefore much bettar.
Revolver
It's more secure. Its to do with how it stores things in its memory I think, it allows it to be more specific longer address for each cluster. Something like that I woudn't be surprised if I'm completely wrong though If you wikipedia it, it will tell you how it works.
Krisboats
What's the actual advantage of 64bit over 32?It is faster in 64bit specific programs because they can run extra cycles (well not extra i guess, just more efficient and with more info) and larger data units and memory addresses every cycle. 64bit systems are capable of running roughly twice as fast, although in reality they are faster, but not doubly so.The downside is that the same data takes up more memory space in 64 bit than in 32 bit, which is why it has far larger RAM allowances. 32bit windows is restricted to 3.something GB where as 64 bit can run somewhere in the region of 128gb.In windows vista the 64bit operating system seems more responsive, and has extra security measures built in, one being no 3rd party licenses can be used which means some 3rd party apps won't work in vista 64 (atitool etc).
