trials_pimp
I cant decide what New Phone I want, and after playing with the New Iphone 3G I quite liked it.I have an LG Veiwty now, so am used to the touch screen. The Iphone has some great credentials and looks sweet. Does anyone on here own one, if so what are they like to live with? Its either that or wait till Late October and Get a N96.
mr ailsbury
Its very americanised? so like you can't send pictures in texts you have to attach them to emails to send themand you have to buy your ring tones from the itunes store on your iPhone and then do some edity thing to pick a little section out that you want as your ring tonebut as long as you can survive with that they feel really nice in your hand, not to heavy/too light and generally nice and easy to use.Everyone I know with an iPhone, new or origional say that they couldn't go back to a normal phone after having an iPhone because they're just so much nicer to use.Not played on an N95 but I personally wouldn't buy one due to the fact that on all the other nokias i've had/used the menus etc are toss and the whole phone just doesn't really work 'right', the N95 seems to have all these flaws AND its about 26 ft thick and it looks shite which makes it even worse lol, not had much luck with any Nokia i've had to be honest so i'm rather sour towards them lol. Steve-A
I've got one.Its great. I dont have much experiance with any of the LG phones but this is what I can tell you bout living day to day with the iphone. Its really easy to use, screens good, bright and readable no matter the conditions. Using it as a normal phone is easy enough and works just as well as any other. Texting is great with the touch keyboard, and I love the auto spelling, as it not only corrects for obvious spelling errors, but also for keyslip, that are easily made due to the small keyboard. It was a bit odd to begin with but now I'm used to it, I can type almost as quick as on a normal full size keyboard. The fact that the texts come up in context, kinda like an msn convo for each person is nice, but annoying if your sending texts to multiple people, as it starts a new 'conversation', then when people reply it goes back to their individual ones. Internets great, i find myself picking up the phone and surfing, if i just wanna check train times, or an ebay item, rather than starting up the computer as its there and ready to go right away. Internet speed does vary loads. If your not in the right area and down to 2g network its rather slow, but if your just trying to check train times while on a ride or something still adequate, when I've got good 3g coverage its quite feasible to watch programs on bbc iplayer whilst passenger in a car for example.I pod works just as well as any other, The headphones can work as hands free, with a small button/microphone blob that hangs by your chin. You can also use this button to skip track, which as I listen on shuffle alot I find useful. The Maps application works great, really useful for not getting lost, but it isn't a sat nav substitute. As a passenger in a car I can use it to guide the driver, and its really good and useful, but as a driver its useless without someone to operate the map. Largely due to the fact that the phone will sleep after 1 min without a user input (aslong as your not watching video etc)The camera is 2mp, and there's no video function. To be honest I've not missed it. Although only 2mp the cameras perfectly good in bright light, and the picture taken with camera look great on the screen, which is mostly where camera phone picture belong anyway. Apparently 3rd party developers are making an application that will offer controls for camera, such as exposure, and will offer video recording. Alas there is no flash, which is a pain sometimes, but not often.Apps from the app store are quite fun. Some of the little games are enough to keep my occupied when bored, and some of the other utility applications are great, such as applications that use the micro phone to listen to music playing and tell you what, pointless but usefull when you wanna know what songs playing in a bar for example, and the apps free. The apps dont really add much value, they are more novelty, but kinda usefull novelty. Its worth reading reviews on app store as quality varies lots.Battery life is good when not played with, but quickly get used up if playing games surfing the net etc. I thin ki get about a true 4/5 hours of play time, and I've only managed about 2 days not playing trying to test stand by time, at which point it was still showing pretty much full charge. I do worry bout scratching it, so have been more careful than other phones, but its survied a few falls ok.Thats all I can think of now. Basically I like it, and its usable enouhg day to day that its taken over some of the functions I use my home computer for.
trials_pimp
Thanks that was very usefull.Ive been reading some reveiws and they are very mixed. Also the reveiws on the N96 do all look good aswell.I dont want to get an Iphone, and then realise the N96 is better and ive missed out, as im stuck in a contract. One application that interests me in Dynolicious: http://dynolicious.com/Looks like great fun in the car. Also would be nice to have good usable internet on the Move.I dont like the idea of Buying ringtone sections, as I have alot of Music and Soundbites that i like to use on my phone on my phone. But on the Pluss side as my Ipod has just broken I do need another music player.

If I can get it on Orange, everyone is a winner!Mind you, that blog doesn't exactly seem THAT reliable.

adamtrials
Hmm I was going to buy an 8gb iPhone on the o2 in the next week or two, reckon it'd be better to wait until it comes out on Orange then the prices will come crashing down? It doesn't really seem too expensive on the £35 contract but I guess it'd be nice to pay less...
anzo
It doesn't really seem too expensive on the £35 contract but I guess it'd be nice to pay less...Yep, but the contract is awful. I think if I went on that certain contract I'd piss through it in a week.Don't you still have to pay for the phone on the £35 contract? If I remember rightly the only reasonable contract is about £50 a month - and even that is matching £30 contracts from other providers.iPhone hype - f**k it, not worth £900 for 18 months (£1057.50 inc. VAT!) Edited August 19, 2008 by anzo

All the contracts seem pretty poor for texts, even the £75 has only 500, guess they want you to pay the extra £7.50 a month for the unlimited text bolt on. Tony Harrison
I always said that if an i-phone was released that had built-in GPS, I'd get it. So I did. No regrets. I got an 8Gb one (reasoning that I wouldn't really need more than that) on the £45 tarif. Suits me fine. Battery life isn't amazing, so it's useful if you can put it on charge at night, although it doesn't take too long to charge.
Walleee
Touch Pro is my second choice...http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/04/the-htc-touch-pro/I'd definately suggest going Windows Mobile rather than Iphone. I havn't used an iphone, but have used an ipod touch, is software easily available for it for free? I know there are literally a good dozen sites that have thousands of applications for WM that are all freeware. I have an o2 xda orbit2, which i just a rebranded HTC phone, it's absoutley fantastic, full touch screen with for buttons and a scroller, the only thing it laskcs is being able to automatically change screen orientation depending on how the phone is held, but because it's windows mobile you can customise any button on the phone to do that for you in one press. If you really want the iphone UI, you can get shell programs, such as ifonz, and I know it's possible to put the actual iphone software on them too, i just wouldn't know how, not to mention not wanting to anyway....edit: re the comment above, does the iphone have gps? as in a built in gps reciever? what software does it use? Getting co-pilot was a big reason for me going WM too. I have a feeling you mean GPRS - as in mobile internet, but could be wrong.... Tomm
No the new iPhone has a GPS receiver in it. There's not actually any navigation software out for it (Yet) as far as I can tell.Having used a Windows Mobile phone for the last year, I wouldn't get another one. Yes, there is a lot of good software out there, but doing simple things like surfing the internet or even making a phone call is annoyingly difficult and long-winded. The iPhone doesn't have the same vast array of (free) applications as Winmo (although the iPhone app store is improving all the time from what I understand), but it does the simple things so well that it's a joy to use rather than a complete pain in the arse. I'll be buying one as soon as my current contract runs out for sure.
Hendrix
Lady I'm on the phone to at Orange reckons it could well be a new addition in the next 12 months, as they're setting up a plan range especially for a new phone.Fingers crossed eh.... trials_pimp
Its such a damn hard decision. The Iphone looks the Nuts and seems to be really user friendly, but having No bluetooth sharing, everything has to be bought from Itunes and alot of news about signal and conectivity seems off putting. The N96 looks awsome, but is very limited by the fact it isnt touch screenand the Omnia seems to be the best of both, but alot of reviews put it behind the others, and say the screen and touchscreen isnt very good.I called Vodafone today to get my PAC code so If I choose an Iphone I can go get one, and I was told by them My account has a budget big enough for them to give me a Omnia For free on the day of its release, or if I can wait an N96.Tempting as Vodafone is by far the best network in this area, and O2 isnt that good. But I dont want to wait all this time to find the N96 isnt good, or settle for the Omnia and find its crap. But then i dont want to jump into an O2 Contract to find the Iphone is too limited by Apples programes, and the signal is crap. Also rumor has it that the Next update, coming in September, will disable the Push E-mail until further Notice.
Hendrix
It has bluetooth.... doesn't it?If they thought they'd have infer-red rather than bluetooth they're idiots.
Walleee
Gps receiver but no software, it'll be interesting to see what they come up with, and at what cost to the user.I see where your coming from in terms of userfriendlyness, the Itouch im familiar wth and web browsing is a dream on it, the touch screen is very intuitive. I think windows mobile may be somewhat hit or miss depending on the hardware your using, I had a typical candybar type phone (o2 XDA Graphite) before I got the orbit2, and was amazed at what I had been missing because the hardware wouldn't let me use windows to it's potential. Im also really shocked at the fact it has a 2mp camera. 2mp is fine, if I want a camera i'll buy a camera, but I just would have thought that if they are making a 3g version, it would make sense to upgrade the camera at the same time, unless they are releasing the technology slowly to make more money...Can you make video calls on it? trials_pimp
The Iphone Does Have Bluethooth, But you cant share files over it.Dont know how they have done it, but its a gay Idea. The GPS Works with Google Maps out of the Box, also lets you Geo-Tag your Photos When you take them. Tony Harrison
I've found GPS and the supplied Google Maps app very useful. I even tried it out in Paris and it worked fine.
