spartan
I decided that as im going to sell it soon that i would rebuild my eno freewheel. So i took it all apart and cleaned all the pawls and the orings and bearings. Then i went to lube it up with some oil, and my dad insisted on some sa40. I put it all back together and now it feels alot stiff then before.Like when i flicked it forward it used to keep going like half a rotation, now it stops almost immediately.Im wondering what could have caused this and if its a big deal or no.ThanksIan
padarik
did you put all the pawls back in the right place?
spartan
naw i took them out one at a time so theres no way, is there and up and down orientation though.
JT!
All the enos i've had never span freely. So long as it's turnable by hand I wouldn't worry about it.
psycholist
Did you leave it on the crank while you were working on it? If you don't take it off it's easy for the seal on the back of the freewheel to move off centre and rub against the outer part of the freewheel when you reassemble it. Once I took the freewheel off the cranks and reassembled the seal correctly (Often just taking the freewheel off will centre it) it spun freely again. PaRtZ
also, you could get away with lubing up the parts, and ten just wiping off quite a bit of excess. I run my eno dry as a bone and its still good. You said you took them out one at a time, did you notice the long and short pawls? have you put them back in alternate order? i.e. long, then short, then long, short etc. Is the lockring cross threaded?Other than these, I have no idea, perhaps a shard of metal is under your bearing and it isn't seated properly... I honestly think its the amount of oil youve used. But as JT said if it turns by hand, the force exerted when in useon a trials bike will be much greater, so its nothing to worry about
Mark W
Like... JT, I think it was, said - Enos generally aren't all that spinny if they're working right. Mine certainly wasn't, so yeah, it could just be that. If it spins when you physically rotate the driveshell with your hand, then you're good. If you just mean it's 'stiff' when you try and flick it to make it spin, then that's not really much of a problem
Captain Scarlet
Mine only ever spun well when the lockring was loose. So long as you have put it all back together correctly then it is fine.
durkie
pretty thorough walkthrough here. double check if you missed anything?
psycholist
I still vote for the seal mentioned in step 20 on the walkthrough being out of place and creating extra drag (If you run a bashguard you won't be able to see it or get at it without taking the freewheel off the crank or dismantling the freewheel again. My ENO is so drag free that with no chain you can see the sprocket move backwards slightly after being spun as the pawls push against the ratchet ring inside the sprocket. Given it's runs on a sealed Enduro bearing, that shouldn't be the cause of the drag anyway...
