Callum-Luvs-Trials
Can we keep it quite simple please, What is modulation?I have heard a lot of people speaking about it recently about brake pads, so what does it mean? imhereithink
modulation is the difference between your brake setup being on/off(no modulation) or you can apply the brake in stages i.e. it doesnt lock up instantly (modulation)Make any sense? Gaz Meredith™
modulation basically means rolling with the brake slightly on, some brakes are to grippy and just lock straight away so they havent got much modulation, but some brake arent grabby and you can feather them so the brake is gently on which usually helps with front wheel moves etc which is why we hear so much about it in trials
bollo you ball-bag
use a dictonary or the random small question thread.brake pads with modulation are pads that will slow the bike down without locking the wheel but also have the ability to lock the wheel when required by the rider applying more pressur to the lever. for example a disk brake has modulation but a magura with a grind ans say plazma\tic pads doesnt have modulation
Chris Woodhouse
Going from the wheel spinning freely to instantly locking = no modulation.A brake that will slow you down, bring you to a stop, lock and bite etc = modulation. Spider Lad
Modulation - the act of modifying or adjusting according to due measure and proportion.i.e. Effort in at the brake lever gives a noticable progressive response in braking, not just an on/off effect. Ben John-Hynes
In braking terms,Modulation mainly involves the bite of the brake,It means that you can roll on either wheel without being instantly stopped.Rim brakes tend to have a lot of bite, therefore, not a lot of modulation.Disk brakes are usually a lot less bitey and offer a lot more modulation.
