froggy
Tar does help although it can screw your braking up if you apply too much and takes ages to come off. It's generally just a messy alternative to having a nicely set up brake. Which is what you should be interested in experiment with pads and grinds. I wouldn't recommend tar. Although if it's tar you want, any old tar will do, roof tar, floor tar can be found around grids in the street etc.
Chris Woodhouse
I got a load of the stuff off roofers, if you ever see them doing a roof or someting just ask or while ther not looking chisel a bit off the tar boiler with an allen key or something not the boiling bit ofcourse just the solid bits on he lip. Headley
A cobbled road is good place to get tar from. You can usually find loose bits that you can pull up with your fingers. Make sure you dont apply to much to your rim though Edited August 4, 2008 by Headley
Ben John-Hynes
I've been told that B&Q do large chunks of it,Go into a B&Q near you and chisel some off.

imhereithink
I always used to use tar, just pick some off a road. But i recently put a light grind on my rim with a set of Koxx blocks (brown ones) and it feels so much better i.e. more modulation of the brake, but still with the same good bite as with the tar. Have you considered using a grind?
