Headset

Unless someone has exactly the same headset then they're just going to be telling you how they *think* it should go together. And basically that's just going to be common sense.

But nobody probably knows that they've got exactly the same headset because you yourself don;t know exactly what headset it is.

I think the best thing to do would be to sit down for a while with all the circles, and think about what you're trying to achieve (all the preassure going through the bearings) and hopefully you'll eventually slot them on in the right combination.

All those circles formed a perfectly good headset at one point, so persevere becasue you're bound to get there in the end.

Edit: to answer definitively whether it's sealed or not, are there currently metric f**kloads of ball bearings rolling around your patio?

Just stating the obvious here, but maybe it'll help:

You'll need one circle of bearings on top of the frame (stem side) and one circle of bearings below the frame (fork side). If they're sealed you probably wont be able to se the balls, it'll just be a thicker circle that has a slidy side (either inside or outside slides, depending on what you're holding!) with BB's within it.

Start from there.

You'll probably have another circle on top of the top bearings before the cap goes on, the cap which probably says hope on it.

Right !

I'll tell you how to do it.

20f5afk.jpg

Numbers from left to right going down from 1 to 9

Number 1 (crown race) is on the forks.

Number 2 (Bottom cup) goes in the bottom of the headtube. With the taper side of the bearing facing up.

Number 3 (top cup) goes in the Frame. with the taper side of the bearing facing down.

Number 4 (the ring with a cut in it comes out i believe) slides down the forks onto the top of the top cup.

Then leave out number 5.

And fit as many spacers as you need. Then bang the stem on. followed by the top cap and screw.

This part is if it's possiable*

Then take one spacer off (the thinnest if possiable)

Bang on the Stem, and see if you've got enough to put the thinnest spacer on top and then the Top cap. It dosen't matter if the spacer protudes the top of the stem a bit.

DONE.

Then go for a quick ride and tighten up the Stem bolts and top cap a bit more once it's bedded in.
