Matt_Thibeau
So i couldnt sleep the other night, and i was wondering what could be somthing cool for my breaks, and then i wondered what would happen if I aplyed a tad bit of honey or syrup to my rim, its sticky like tar and easy to get too. So in the mourning i whiped my rims clean of tar and grime, and apllyed a little, it works great!! super bitey and doesnt seem to wear out! it has a awsome sound too! So just as a experiment, give it a go Im not too sure if anyone has tried this though! Matt Thibeau!

TheChai
the waxy stuff they use on volin strings seem to work as well, much cleaner alternative. =P, but honey seems really good.
tmks88
my friend used coke + tar a few years ago, it worked well until all the sand and dirt was stuck on the rim
Captain Scarlet
Yea I know of some guys who rode XC bikes as trials around the time of the two Martin's, coke or fizzy drinks used to be all the rage for them.

spaceman
Ants aren't attracted to the honey right? Cos honey isn't really sugar?Honey can also be applied to your wounds, and aids in the healing.

psycholist
I bet Ryan Leech uses Maple Syrup... Given that honey is water soluble I'm guessing that at the first sign of wet the braking will disappear though, probably no worse that tar, but given a grind needs less minding and isn't as sensitive to the wet for the Irish/UK climate there is no other choice for me... Mark W
The only replacement I found that worked better than tar was the ability to set up a brake well (And a grind )

Matt_Thibeau
I have heard of the coke idea, and most of the others, i think honey is pretty cool though i only use it on my front V-brake though, with abit of tar on the back
that NBR dude
One random one I used to use years ago, was on rear disc brakes. I used to pour neat ribena over the rotor and leave it to dry/set for a few mins. Used to work amazingly well and lasted ages.
psycholist
It's ok in the winter when there are no wasps out, but in the summer I'd expect the insect life (and various small furry animals) to be very interested in your bike if it smells of food... HarshRider
I went through a phase of using tar and other things like hairspray, if you use it though i would say you must be careful not to over apply it. often my pads would stay sticking to the rim.I always use a grind now, mainly because it doesn't increase the ability to become sticky (thats what a good set of pads is for) the grind just increases the friction between the rim and pads! which i would say is more reliable and predictable then using other sticky substances.in a quick fix i would say use hair spray, quick and effective, but don't last long!
