Mpg!

Not necessarily true. If your coasting at 40mph, then putting my van into 5th gear whilst you don't need to accelerate revs my engine at approx 1,200rpm (idle at 900rpm) an actually I dont notice any engine braking at all in comparison to coasting in neutral at 40mph, so I may aswell put it in 5th gear an save the engine theoretically putting any fuel in to keep the engine idling. Sorry for being anal but I'm so into fuel consumption stuff after working in bio-diesel refinery. :$

Well obviously it will depend on the engine revs and also the vehicle. Although all cars I have driven would slow down quicker in gear even at 1200rpm. Bear in mind I am talking about eeking out every last metre possible by coasting. If you coast a distance of say 1 mile I'm sure you would notice a speed difference at the end compared to staying in 5th. Also I'm pretty anal about fuel efficiency, which is the reason I learnt these techniques in the first place, so you're in good company. On my route to work there are a lot of fast and short stretches of road, with junctions at the end. So I basically pulse and glide the whole way. Each coast you only save a small amount of fuel, but if you do it all the time it adds up.

Aaaah, just smashed my all-time MPG personal best.

Driving between Swindon and Malvern, and averaged 59.0mpg (it was 59.1 before the last bit of hill before my house :P). This is in a '99 1.6L Petrol Audi A4 Estate with plenty of stuff in the back.

My god it was slow, but... score!

...Someone get me an efficient diesel!

Pretty impressive! I don't know how you guys do it. The best I've ever done in my CRX is about 45mpg and that's a really light car (plus it's rarely loaded). Probably something to do with it having a close ratio gearbox and no proper overdrive. Recently did 35mpg on a full tank which was the worst result ever - and that was all down to doing an average of 110mph over a distance of 70 miles. I'd probably be lucky to get 30mpg on the Autobahn. Pretty hopeless.

Engine: Petrol

Size: 2.0 Turbo

Model: 1998 Volvo S40 - Somewhat modified

Driving Conditions: France trip average (mostly 75-80mph motorway with trips up mountians 1000m above sea level with sharp inclines and windy roads)

Combined MPG: Amazingly I was getting 500 miles to a tank of 60 litres (only using 55 litres of that gives me 41mpg!!!)

Comments: Also map not finished!! I was trying to get the best fuel consuption but I did occasionally floor it.

Yeah it's amazing what you can get mpg wise on the continent with their long straight roads with very few traffic jams. The lack of stop/start traffic is what helps, just being able to sit at a nice cruising speed. My car made about 28mpg on trip to Le Mans for the same reason compared to the usual 22 i get when being careful in this country.

I commute 25 mi to work (when in the office) and I try to slipstream lorries on the m'way (the traffic's pretty bad and it's comparably not that slow and a lot less stop-start).

1.2l petrol punto does about 52mpg usually (trip computer).

Do get home with the logo for Meditterranean Shipping Company burned into my retinas often though.

And how tempting is it to make some kind of harpoon device and take slip streaming to a new level? Just kidding the question is rhettorical. 'Very' is the answer.

Right so i just used a full tank over the space of 3 weeks. just filled it to the brim and worked out that with my normal driving, bit of town driving and alot of country lanes i got 48MPG. Not bad for my little citroen AX!!!! that was 388.6 miles to 36.56 litres.

I hope it's not a Diesel one :o. A Diesel AX did just under 1500miles on 50 Liters.

But thats pretty good for a Petrol one if not :)

My Rover seems to be very good on fuel !

I put £20 of fuel in it a 104.9 and managed to drive 210 miles mainly on the motorway.

Dunno how many MPG's that is though.

No it didn't, stop exaggerating.

Have been averaging just over 55mpg in my A4 now, this is combined, mainly motorway, but with a fair bit of London traffic jams & town driving thrown in! Current 99.9p prices atm gives me about 8.2p per mile (compared with 14.9p how it used to be in my 38mpg scirocco and £1.25 per litre petrol costs!). I reckon I could get 75mpg out of a diesel equivalent of my car, which would be 6.7p per mile! :D

I would like to point out to anyone that slipstreams lorries (including myself, 90% of the time when on the motorway), it may attract attention from the rozzers, as I found out last night. :P Obviously blagged my way out of it, but do keep an eye out. :)

Yeah as much as i try i just cant get the elusive 70 mpg :P its a 1l petrol, and that was with ragging it from time to time...

During the october half term i'm probably gonna drive down to the south of france for some camping so ill see what it gets on a motorway journey, 130kph all the way (80mph)
