What Video Camera Do You Use?

I am about to buy a video camera and was wondering what to look for. I buy it to film trials riding so who's better to ask than the people who had done this already.

So what camera do you use?

Is it on mini DV or on a mini DVD? I am excluding the HD version cameras, because they are too expensive...

And all the other characteristics and models of cameras will be well taken I just need advice. I have currently stopped on a Samsung with mini dvd recording, but really like the Sony one and it is on the same price but it is on mini DV. So what is the difference is there any difference at all when you upload everything on a PC?

Thanks in advance.

I use a JVC HDD camera.

Was surprisingly cheap, when I got it I too was just looking for a camera to make riding videos, on a budget.

Will try and find the exact model...

Edit: Everio G something. They bring new ones out every 5 minutes, but you wont go far wrong with one of those.

I use a Panasonic NV - GS80 Comes with built in wid angle, which is okay. But not to be used with a fish eye. Has a tripod mount. Can also mount a flash. Fish eye lense was only about £20 from America, as there isnt many places local I could find one.

I like the way it looks, and feels like a decent camera. Have only filmed 2 videos since I got it as xmas. has been worth the money though! Has both fire wire and USB. firewire is way better though. And its MIni DV

One down side though, the battery life is a bit poo about £20 for another one though!

However back to the real world of cameras...

Your best bet is a Mini DV camera, which records onto a Digital video tape. You can get ones that record onto DVDs, or Hard Drives, but form my experience, MiniDV still remains the best option.

As mentioned previously, the Panasonic NV-GS range is very good value for money. I started with a GS60 and it was excellent. Reasonable quality at low light, and loads of useful features built in. Have a look around Amazon within your price range, and see what you can find. If you need some advice, add me to MSN if you like.

Edit - Oh and avoid that HD camera mentioned about like the plague. Its not true HD and its solid state. The recording quality of that camera is terrible and they are incredibly cheap knock offs. Stick to the well known brands, and you cant go wrong. Avoid any unbranded or unknown brand cameras

Thanks for all you answers.

Actually here in Bulgaria there isn't much of a choice. I can choose among JVC, Sony, Panasonic and Samsung. I want to go with Sony though, because I trust their products the most. I like the JVC cameras too. My moms school has one that records on a hard drive and the quality is excellent. Although I think it doesn't support 0 LUX recording...or am I wrong? The Panasonic ones are kind of expensive for my pocket...at least the models they have here.

NRBCycles what's your mail I want to ask you a thing or two about the way of recording and the difference it seems that you know a lot and will take some of your time if you don't mind ;)

Thanks again, guys I love you

I just bought a SONY DCR-HC51E. It's nice and it's with a mini DV.

Will try it soon and make a video soon and hope it's not going to make any problems.
