G-baby158
Hi, do you think a shop will be able to helicoil these mounts back down to m5 ?Thanks.
austen
How did you manage that, there sh*gged! But yeah they should be able to, just tap it to m6 then helicoil back down to m5? Thats how its done is it not?I'm not too sure if a bike shop will do it for you though, you might have to look into a local engineering place or something.Austen. Captain Scarlet
Yea most bike shops won't be able to helicoil it.They may be able to drill and tap the M6 thread, but the actual helicoil.Although from there you could just buy a helicoil kit and wind the coil in yourself.I got mine done by a motorbike specialist, look for anyone who works with engines of some sort as they no doubt will have had to deal with helicoiling at some point, either by themselves or they will know of someone who can. JonMack
Why can't people just helicoil themselves? You just drill a hole, tap it using the tap in the helicoil kit, then screw the insert in and snap the tang off. It's not exactly hard, and it's certainly a lot easier than tapping mounts to M6 then having to use different bolts, drill out maggie adaptors, etc.Plus a helicoil kit costs about £20 and has usually has about 10 inserts in, and if you go to a garage you'll spend £15 getting all 4 done.I learnt how to tap doing metalwork in school, has that part of school education been removed these days? Fish-Finger-er
get a bolt, an m6 bolt, such as a v brake bolt, or normally a bar/stem clamp bolt, or a top nut, and see if it fits in the hole.

AdamR28
I think its been taped to m6 but cross treaded will that be ok ?Not if you want it back to M5. It will have to go to M6, which will be dodgy as there's not a lot of meat around the hole (which will have to go out to 7mm now).

AdamR28
There's not enough meat for that unfortunately. All I can think of is drilling right through the mount and seeing if theres enough left in the bottom to get something to bind into... munkee
pffft! stop messing around with helicoils... man up, drill right through everything get yourself a lovely nut and bolt and tighten the f**kers up. Job done no fuss and will clamp a hell of a lot tighter than those gaybar threaded frames ..................... or! grind the c**ts off and get some new mounts welded on Edited July 21, 2008 by Spacemunkee

Captain Scarlet
Why can't people just helicoil themselves?Because for the amount of useage its blooody expensive, sure I might be able to do friends mounts in the unlikely event they strip theirs, but still not much usage.I got 2 helicoils done for £5 from a local engineer and that saved a hell of a lot of money buying the appropriate drill size, tapping kit and helicoil kit.Not forgetting a drill if you don't have one. I guess I have the advantage that my dad has a decent workshpo downstairs with most tools in, so I already have drills, taps, etc.I suppose if youre not very mechanically minded it wouldnt make much sense, but for me a £20 one off payment was well worth it, even though I only used it once. Captain Scarlet
Ah right, the engineer I went to pretty much had a helicoiling kit with just the coils and the tool, he used his own taps.Ah well, he's gone out of business now, so as long as I don't strip my two standard threads I shouldn't haven't to buy a kit. =D
Al_Fel
I'm not a mong with an allen key so I don't have these problems. The only thing I can suggest is grinding those mounts flat and trying to attatch steel 4 bolt mounts one way or another...Looking at them you could probably grind each side of the mounts to make them thinner then sit the brase on mount over it and glue it on with some alderite or something like that maybe even screw through the side.Edit: here's a pic on paint to show what I mean. Mat Smith!
blob of weld back into the hole and restart?or just buy a helicoil kit.or just drill your mounts all the way through and use long bolt?or just use m6 tap and drill your magura mounts.Matx
