gu trials
what is your thought on this ? Edited July 12, 2008 by gu trials
Endohopper
We should welcome innovation , but in this case the absurdly large disc would be prone to damage / warping whilst probably adding a considerable weight penalty . First footage of this I've seen , though , as there was a picture circulating of a ( horrible ) bike thus equipped literally years ago . I'm not entirely certain which problem this is attempting to solve , because existing conventional rim and disc brakes already offer huge , controllable stopping power , let alone with modern trials specific pads / grinds . I seem to recall a recent thread asking if we even need such excessive stopping power at all . Also both the rim and brake mounts need extensive modification and the rim needs to remain perfectly true . You never know though , we may see Mr.Tarty stocking this one day , but I'll stick with a carefully set up Deore V-brake .EDIT : The caliper seems to be at an inconvenient ankle snagging location , too . Skoze
As is said above, that thing looks to be so impractical! Rims are often dented/ buckled from trials use, so having the disc attached to it would then be losing one of the qualities of a standard disc, that no matter what happens to the rim, you still have a very good, working brake. And with todays "weight-weenies" Who would ever consider using one Seems to have a fair bit o' power in that video, mind...Oh, it's a repost btw. Revolver
Believe it or not, its a repost! The power is greater than that of a disc, but you may as well go for a rim brake.

Luke Rainbird
Meh, props to the guy for trying though. He's on his second version now, with more streamlined caliper mounting and a floating rotor I think. He seems happy with it, and at least somebody out there is trying some new stuffThere's a fair load of information on OTN if anybody wants to know more
PaRtZ
yeah I remember this and thinking the same as above ^^ Don't think I watched the whole video though hes atleast testing it properly, hes landed kinda short on that up and its stil holding, so that does test it Thing is, not everyone rides as smooth as that (as said in the previous topic I think) so fair enough it suits him well, but to the rest of us bashers, it wont last long
Shaun H
In some of the situations where that hold might be useful, you'll also probably buckle the rim and render the brake useless.
