Ben John-Hynes
mechanical derailler = either word. derailler or 'mech' How the HELL are you people spelling derailleur. Yes, a mech does keep the chain tight when run with gears, that's why some people use them as tensioners, 'cause they're good tensioners.

Al_Fel
A mech or what ever changes gear. A tensioner only tensions the chain and dosen't/can't change gear. Thats the way I see it.

Revolver
So just to clear a few things up...A mech is NOT a mech hanger, correct? A mech IS a derailleur, correct?A mech is the mechanical bit. The hanger is called a hanger or mech hanger. So you are right!Mech = mechanical = mechanisms working together = moving parts. If something doesn't move it can't be a mechanism.
