D A N N Y
Hi, all i just wonderd how i could make my brakes better i was doing gaps earlier and my brakes kept slipping and i fell off 3 times in the space of about 10 mins and i just wonderd what are the pros and cons of tar or a grind. Many Regards Danny
Ben John-Hynes
1st. What pads do you have? 2nd. You may need to bleed your brake. Grind- They wear down pads faster and are needess in the summer/dry times. A brake set up consisting of a smooth rim and the correct pads can be as good as a set up with a grind. When it happens to be wet, they are lifesavers. A grind also impares the life of your rim.

Captain Scarlet
Echo pads, smooth rim, and some tar. Also worthwhile investing in a booster if you don't already have one.

Toby
Echo pads, smooth rim, and some tar. Also worthwhile investing in a booster if you don't already have one. surely when using tar it doesn't really matter what pads you use?
Ladd
Smooth rim, Plaz CRM, Tiny tiny bit off tar, AMAZING lots of bite and hold
G-baby158
surely when using tar it doesn't really matter what pads you use? +1 tar sticks to the pad so if you have tar you dont need to worry that much.
Captain Scarlet
surely when using tar it doesn't really matter what pads you use? To an extent yes, as pretty much any pad grips using tar. However, with Deng pads such as the Echo's I use have quite a tacky feel on a smooth rim without tar (where-as with a harder pad it just slips). Therefore I only need to put a small tad of tar on my rim just give it a bit of lock. When I used standard magura blacks the pads really stuck to the rim, good hold but not good when you want to quickly let the brake off. Greetings
A brake set up consisting of a smooth rim and the correct pads can be as good as a set up with a grind. I don't agree with that. You can get good braking on a smooth rim but for a brake which relies on friction, a grind will always improve performance. And as mentioned above, Cousts are great for smooth rims even though they're super hard.

Elmo =)
Cousts are great for smooth rims even though they're super hard. There amazing, but because they were so good at holding on to the rim they ripped out of the backings and yeah. i never used tar on them. but that was with rear mounts on the front. hI-OOPS-CAPS
ive just rekindled my love of tar, and its brilliant. the wheel will never slip no matter how much of the wheel it not on a wall/how far you hang off. it can tolerate a little bit of water, rain etc and i ride natural around rock pools etc
The Duck
Grind- needess in the summer/dry times. Incorrect.
psycholist
Smooth rims are great (I ran one with Rock Green pads for a while) - roll through some damp grass, hit a puddle wrong or cycle in even the lightest of rain and you might as well not have brakes at all. Don't know about anyone else, but that completely ruined my confidence in smooth rims for trials, so I'm now on a harsh grind with Superstar red pads. Loads of noise (Which I'd rather not have) and it holds every time, wet or dry . I don't think grinding really affects rim life unless you do a lot of grinding - I grind my rims possibly 3 times a year (If I'm riding a lot) and still have never replaced a rim through it being worn out. When I used rim brakes for XC I'd wear through the braking surface of a rim in about a year, thanks to the brakes being dragged rather than used to lock the wheels and mud making very good grinding paste. I've only once worn through a trials rim and it took at least 3 or 4 years...
