Basically... its hard to explain but i can't go anywhere without any noise. Its something i do totally subconciously, if i walk into a room knowing I'm going to be in there for only 30 seconds i still switch on a Tv or play music on my phone. If i walk round the house i must have music on, if i leave the house i must have an MP3 or of least ambiant noise... scilence drive me uttery mad!

i really struggle in situations like exams, even when i revise i have to have something happening. I went to the libary the other day and it felt really wierd after a minute or so i got really hot under the collar and started sweating and couldn't stop laughing and just couldn't control myself.... I lose my concentration really easily in scilence :S

Whats up with me? :S

I was the same. Getting out of the habit now though.

All started with not wanting my stomach to rumble (or be heard) during my GCSE's.

when i go to sleep in summer say, with the fan on. when i come to turn it off im like - was it always this quiet, too quiet actually.

i heard wayne rooney needs, or can only sleep with the vacuum cleaner on.

The waye rooney syndrome is for the reasuring sound of an older woman (granny) being close.

I would suggest several things. One, that the absence of stimulus allows awareness of concerns or anxiety that are otherwise distracted by the continual stimulus that you expose yourself to. Two, potentially at the same time also, you have dependence on stimulus. You'll notice that in this society people continually move from one stimulating thing to the next. You do it so much that the quiet becomes alien - out of the norm. We're often scared of novelty. The thing is, the quiet is absolutely beautiful when you get used to it (again). I specifically go on silent retreat because it quietens your mind and allows for peace with you and not just your environment. It can be very profound in fact.

Silent retreat? Sounds like a bunch of fun,but what do you mean by that?

The place I went to and am going again was in the countryside away from noise. You're not supposed to converse with anyone there and you spend most of your time meditating or just observing your surroundings. I came back feeling incredibly peaceful. My intention is to do it for three months next March but I'm also going again in about 6 weeks. Highly recommended to individuals who are interested in trying to understand themselves and are looking for some contentment with the simple (but fascinating) fact that you exist.

ADHD?

Thats what I would have gone with. A lot of the kids I used to work with who had ADHD were also quite obsessive compulsive, and I remember one of them who used to get massively worked up if you were just sat around him not doing anything or making any noise. With them it seemed to just be this unidentifiable compulsion to be always occupied in some way, otherwise they'd flip out.

But thats just my best guess.
