Ben John-Hynes
What I do is screw the top-cap bolt into it and pull it by any means necessary.
RossMcd
aare you going to reuse the forks? i have a method but you wont be able to use the forks again
Ben John-Hynes
OR you could get something long and hard, Slide it into the hole in the bottom of the steerer and bash it with something.

PaRtZ
If you have one, You can get very long drill bits (like a foot long, and about 14mm diameter) use that + hammer

davey1991
Yes tried that its not budging i will have to put one over the top. Does anyone know how much they will cost? DO NOT put a new one over the top delibaratley over tighten the top bolt it'll bend it then knock it out with the handle of a spanner or screw driver and a hammer. AND there only like £4or £5 but you should seriously concider one of these. it reduces the risk of over tightening and cannot come loose. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=567 i have one it is amazing. Hope i helped. Davey. Edited June 22, 2008 by davey1991
_Owen.
May i ask why you want it out? The common thing to do, it nock it down a bit further, and put the other one on top. No real need to take it out! Owen
JonMack
If you tap the edges in with a screwdriver eventually you can push it sideways then pull it out with pliers. I did two like this from my Megamo forks, worked fine.
BenLeacock™
Get a screwdriver, put the shaft into the centre of the star nut, hit it as hard as you can, this should loosen it up abit. Then get your longer drill peice and it should be easyer to move. Reason id say use a screewdriver first is, you've got more of a area to hit, can hit it harder and if you get the right side can rest it in the centre. If you manage to hit it hard enough it SHOULD shatter, mine did anyway !
AdamAllen
Knock it out the bottom, If it doesn't budge.. drill it out. Mine just unscrews
PaRtZ
Yes tried that its not budging i will have to put one over the top. Does anyone know how much they will cost? try a bigger hammer then. seriously, If you give it enough pasty, it WILL move. Unless the bottom of your forks (a la echo team stylee) has a smaller internal diameter. Smashing it to pieces also works as well
psycholist
I'd go for the drilling option if you can't hammer the star nut through. The big problem with removing them is that the star nut has steel teeth while the steerer of your forks (Which is very structurally important) is aluminium and will get chewed to bits by moving the start nut around too much... Why do you need to remove the star nut? The only good reason for taking it out is if the threads strip. sstein
Never try to take a star nut out the same way the it went in (i.e. through the top). They are designed to withstand large forces in this direction so will damage your forks. What you will need is a rubber mallet and a couple of extender bars for a ratchet driver. This is how you do it: 1- Place the bottom of the forks on a solid surface (the floor generally works well). 2- Put the shortest extender bar in the steerer tube so it sits on the star nut, then smash it with a mallet, this will get it moving). 3- Repeat step two with until the top of the steerer and top of the extender are flush, then change the size of the extender and repeat. 4- It will eventually just pop out. Trust me, it is the Halfords way - If you don't have the correct tool, smash it with a hammer. Hope this helps.
psycholist
A lot of forks have a much smaller diameter hole at the bottom of the steerer than at the top (They thicken the steerer wall to reduce peak stress at the fork crown), so hammering the star nut through may not work. What it will do is score all the way down the steerer tube though... If I had to take one out I'd drill the centre of the nut out and fold or break the steel parts so they just fall out. If you use a long thin hacksaw blade (Junior hacksaw should fit) you can cut the star nut while it's still in the fork once the centre is drilled out, so it can be taken out without marking the the fork at all. There only like 50p at my local bike shop, maybe i read that wrong But yeah those headlocks are much better, you should spend the extra money and get one of them
