aener
It's one thing that makes me genuinely sad about the current trials scene, is that a lot of new riders don't know just how good they've got it. We used to order parts from all over the world because we had to. People would come back from the Worlds with new gloves, sprays or shoes you just couldn't get in the UK. People would trawl through shops trying some really naff components because they could see they might work well. You had to understand what you needed, and how you needed it to work in order to find something that would work well. Now you just buy a Zoo! whatever and you're set. We used to scour magazines for a few words or a photo about trials. If there was a whole article, you practically framed it! I think I still have an article in MBi about Libor Karas, this funny Czech bloke who could just do the most amazing things. I wish I was there in these days. ...Feel like such a poser, now. HarshRider
haha im not as old school in trials as some of the people here. i started when the top brands were brisa and koxxs. there were no others really. my first "trials" bike was a saracen xcile, d521's elgato tyres, some bars i found in halfords. at the time it was amazing. old school was also trying to do a gap at the same time as a gap, haha i still however ride a leeson so i havant really gone.... new school? F-Stop Junkie
I wish I was there in these days. ...Feel like such a poser, now. Don't get me wrong, the current scene is awesome. You can get a great bike at a low price and it's easy to get information and vidoes to help you progress. The riding standard now is just light years ahead what people were doing then. Ben Cox
haha for me, old school is: DCD's (union jack of course) 521's mtb frames with low seats Power pro's P2's Planet x sticky pads wetting some sugar in some kitchen roll and rubbing it round the rim to make it stop (ish) Xstreet Btm And yes i was a member of modandstock and the rest, also i have a piece of nostalgia in the shape of a Section7 tee Ben
UrbanLegend
Brings back memories... I remember our little crew all used to run Crud Catchers, just because we saw them on the Martyn's bikes!! We never went near mud! BB Rise? WHAT? My XC frame with £20 chromo forks was so low at the BB, my pedals hit the ground when I went round a corner haha Anyone remember when Powerpro's were called Sidewinders? Used to round off the tapers no matter what. One of my mates snapped a pair in 2 hours!! But still, I miss those days more than anything, trials is absolutely nothing like it used to be. In a sadistic way, I wish for a year or two trials could revert back to that era... I wonder how many riders would quit, not having all the lovely shiny bits we have now? mr ailsbury
back when T-masters and T-mags were the shit and like something you aspired to ride lol The little videos of that chinese guy doing wheelies/stoppies on a 20 inch Koxx being able to ride without fear of losing your bike/bag HS11's and when gold leaver maggie HS33's were the ultimate in pimp technology lol The Green T-Bird LE was a pimp machine T-Raptors that snapped every 2 seconds and when getting said t-raptor frames shoddily re-welded at the local retard shop was considered a good idea When koolstop pads, smooth rims and a load of tar was good enough and TRA with his massive echo videos, and of course the trials kings when sticky fingers came out and everyone who rode 26 inch had them red Hot S tyres Coming home and seeing new 'pro rider' videos like every week... Going on trials kings at school and watching all the little clips when the old Onza website was actually fairly up to date lmao Not really Uber old school, I was just past the square frame tpro's and the ones that looked like t-birds phase some of the older riders still rode megamo's, brisas, orange zero's and planet x Zebdi's though Edited June 20, 2008 by mr ailsbury
casualjoe
Peter Kraus, Martin Kleivard and Ed Toungue Studying every advert in MBUK trying to find the best stuff for my small amount of money and learning every bike products name by accident because all the names were so cool and really made you want them. Why did Specialised stop making Evil Twins? they were awesome. Grimeca disc brakes on the other hand... bitemybutt
For me it's: Wanting a Crescent Illions more than anything in the world...... (http://biketrials.com/comp/Motorama-2000/jj-crescent.shtml) Going on the trialskings forum every five minutes Having a seat so I could do 'sit-down' manuals (coaster wheelies) Wheelying ALL the time Having to buy anything remotely trialsy from Bikedock Riding for a laugh, not to see how high/big people could go Brakes which seemed amazing at the time, but would be dangerous today! PROPER GAP JUMPS, NOT THIS GAP TO FRONT WHEEL MALARKEY ALL THE TIME!!!!!!! (it's cheating )
strat-trials
I remember an article in MBUK of Edd and Matt riding down a big rock face near a bridge, one of the first ones i bought. Wishing I had a Pashleys 26mhz. Then I landed up working in there on a satudays, had a matt black 26mhz and riding in the car park outside the shop. Then meeting up with the people that were riding town that day after the shop closed! I had a dcd on my saracen xile, having to bend it so that it would fit around my massive chainstays.A guy called Matt? from brum/solihull who had a black 26mhz with gold power pro cranks riding along a rail and me thinking it was the coolest thing in the world! giantwhore
Old school for me was going out riding on my 16in Kona Muni Mula dirt jumping then one day riding past 2 guys(who are now my longest running mates) and watching them riding off a 1ft wall. I bought some p2 forks and a bashguard and that was it, a trials bike! Back then trials was such a challenge, there was no one to watch or learn from. I remember when my mate bought a rocket pro fab trials. That thing was pure sex!!! He still has it now! r2wtrials
I had a rocket ... and a Sunn team frame. But then i am old school anyway. In fact, so old i nearly forget what school i went too! I still ride an old school set up... Giant team frame with a V brake on the rear and a hope on front. Mavic 121 rims and it has a seat... well, a small trials one. But it at least lets me play and practice for my motorcycle trials... and it was cheap
