walker
Okay, so ive got a uni exam on thermodynamics this afternoon, all about heat engine cycles and heat transfer. But the module expects you to memorise every single derivation for every cycle, if you could get 100% in this exam you should be teaching the course! Our lecturer was rubbish anyway! couldn't understand what he was saying, you might as well have taught yourself the course. Maybe i should have put this in the angry thread, but just wondering, are all uni lecturers this bad, because i rearely come across a good one, they're all foreign (not trying to be racist or anything) and they can't explain anything! Ive got quite a decent understanding of this module, but the exam expects you to memorise every relationship for every scenario! How do you find your modules at uni? Obviously im doing an engineering degree, or that make it ok to expect a photographic memory? Also, does anyone like thermodynamics? rant over Andrew
hI-OOPS-CAPS
i like my thermodynamics course, yr1 mech eng. the lectures were yknow, alright. i aced my exam though. havent the results back yet but im just confident of a 1st, or atleast 60% the exam didnt just have thermodynamics in though, half the paper was electrical. - complex ac theory, powerfactor, ac/dc motors, 3phase motor. other half was more energy systems, heat transfer, bernoulli etc
walker
that sounds really hard, theres a lot to learn there, but it really depends how much depth they take you into it and how much they give you in the exam. this lecturer just happens to be an arsehole! Luke Rainbird
Did thermo last year, and it was a bit of a strange one Through the course of the year, we were given a small textbook worth of notes each lecture, of solid text filling the page (just a few essential diagrams/flow charts to break it up a little) Trying to remember everything won't happen, but if you remember the main few bits, you can generally derive most others without too much hassle Our exam turned out to be a bit of a collaboration of old questions, following the familiar format which also helped make the exam a bit more simple to prepare for
Guest
Don't you get a forumula sheet of similar? I know for my exam (which I failed ) we got a small book of stuff. My module is 'engineering science, which covers thermo dynamics and fluid mechanics. Can any of you recommend any good resources for learning this stuff? I've a re-sit to do at the start of august and am also in the unfortunate position of having crap notes, my lecturer for the thermodynamics part of the course was shite. edit: by resources I mean books, websites etc. Edited June 13, 2008 by Jakers
forteh
Our thermodynamics module was split between 2 different lecturers, one was welsh and very good, the other was pretty crap. Im not sure how but I got something like 80% in my 3rd year thermodynamics exam Our fluid and thermo were seperate modules and exams, I seemed to do better in the thermo for some reason. We werent expected to memorise tables of emperical data though. Good luck with the exam Edited June 13, 2008 by forteh
walker
have had the exam, hmm not going to get the best mark thats for sure, but should be a pass and i also got a good mark in the coursework, so im happy. We basically get a formula sheet that gives you all the simple stuff that you already know, no enought toderive a lot of things, which is just lame. Anyway, only one more exam to go, seriously looking forward to summer (new bike !
