spaceman
My mtb street friend used only 3 rotor bolts for his rear brake. He also cut his thomson seatpost to 1 inch. There was a time where they got so weight weenie that they cut their bars to shoulder-width.
sidehop
My headtubes drilled... Brake cable mounts are taken out and some crazy grinding down the bottom..
Daniel C
wouldnt it be easyer to go on a diet? could save you some money in the end.
Bearded Midget
wouldnt it be easyer to go on a diet? could save you some money in the end. theres a big difference with yourself being light and your bike being light, makes completely different effects..which i generally cant be arsed to type out... as for topic geeza, if you dont ride competitions or natural then its best not too bother. otherwsie you could do the headtube, rims, cut of excess drop outs, drill through top part of forks, obviously alot of weight to be saved on filing/drilling rims, cutting treads from tyres, not using any headset spacers and cutting down your forks...all that stuff....and probably more... spencer@hulltrials
Whats the point?
DrEvil270183
Whats the point? Make moves a lot easier, plus for comp riding you won't get tired as fast. Lot easier to move the bike around etc
walker
personally i think its something that only the best riders should do, as your going to lose your warrenty by doing it and what difference is it going to make? Maybe 1 or 2mm by applying newton's second law, surely its better to improve your technique to gain height, not hack your bike to bits?! Andrew i'll have to agree with this im an old school rider and have been riding trials on and off for 12 years ! changing my technique has been hard but to keep up its a must do ! i have improved my riding and height WITHOUT DRILLING anything . but i still wanna see some pics ! come on get them posted up ! TheChai
used to saw bolts till they were about 5 mm long, for every single bolt on the bike.. pedal cages were drilled inner cages removed with drilled alu spacers. whole steeer tube had a total of 12 holes in it, snapped after 2 months though lol alex rim with 20 mm holes which were then extended into uneven ovals by drilling using the side of the drill bit and filling alot lol lever blades milling out monty cranks thats all i can think of off the top of my head.. i think they used to cut the extra bits on the monty tyres as well.. to make them look like what most tyres look now.. tmks88
i have improved my riding and height WITHOUT DRILLING anything . make your bike lighter and you will improve even more i changed my tyres to lighter ones last week got 800g!!! off and i dont get tired so fast now also it feels a lot better when sidehopping and gapping and taps which were hard for me before are now very easy! you dont have to drill and grind everything off your bike you can just use lighter parts and drill something not so important like headtube i want to get my bike about 10 to 10.5kg currently its about 11,5 before it was over 12kg
walker
well u must have been running pretty heavy tyres. Theres nothing wrong with uprating the components on ur bike, but this thread is about cutting holes in things and invalidationg your warrenty (and ultimately putting your health at risk) to make 2mm height difference and so on. People haven't been doing it for that long, so im waiting for the time when fatigued components break due to pointless holes have been cut in them. People are always going to copy the Pros, but they change their components every month! I just dont get some people...!
Al_Fel
I think its part of the fun of trials. People who moan about what other people do to their bikes are fools. It can be fun for people to look at their bike and see how they can improve/lighten it.
strat-trials
People have drilled holes in parts and cut bits off for years, its not a new fashion. Drilled, Bashring, outer pedal cages/removed inners, quick release levers, brake clamps/levers, inner walls of rims, seatposts/clamps, dropouts, boosters, hubs, pedal bodies, stems, bars, top caps. All been done before, years ago. If you want a light bike then do it. Edited June 10, 2008 by strat-trials

People are always going to copy the Pros, but they change their components every month! I just dont get some people...! Tyres can be silly heavy - a dual ply wide 26" tyre with wire bead at around 1200g is substantially weightier than a single ply thin tyre with a kevlar bead at nearer 600g The warranty on trials parts is rarely amazing, and generally after a year or so you won't have one anyway Removing a sensible amount of material from a headtube or similar is unlikely to be putting your health at risk any more than looking out of the window on a gloomy day only to see the other girls eating ice cream with the badgers Making a bike lighter isn't necessarily about getting an extra inch on your sidehops or anything like that, but it can make it easier to ride, or mean you can ride longer without getting tired which means you can ride more often/for longer People have been modifying bikes in loads of different ways for ages, but it's just becoming more common more recently and some people are doing it without actually thinking, removing material that might be needed, or in a way that generates stress risers in critical locations If it's not your bag, then don't do it baby
