531joshua
Ive been looked around the forum a bit and have seen a few different threads dedicated to cars/bikes but havnt seen any for classic cars in general. I know a fair few people on here own or have owned a classic car and show and interest in them. So to begin - Im currently learning to drive and Ive been thinking about getting an oldish car, something with a bit of class. I quite like the Triumph Spitefire 1500 at the moment although I did like the Minis you see them quite a bit. I want something that isnt seen as much and is more unique sort of thing. http://classiccarsales.ie/files/cars/image...39317d3810b.jpg Anyone else got any thoughts on this for a first car? that NBR dude
Ahh yea, my dad had a Spitfire! Awesome cars, handled really well and sounded so nice. One thing I would say is hunt round for insurance first, as companies tend to charge a lot / wont insure at all for young people on classic cars. My sister had trouble until she was 22, no one would insure her on a 1961 Triumph Herald.
531joshua
Ah right doesn't sound too good then - females insurance is cheaper. I'm gonna have a look on some insurance comparison websites now. As you were saying the spitfires handle well - I loved my dads. They're rear wheel drive, so it makes it loads of fun especially in the wet! The only thing Ive been looking down upon about the spitfire is the fact that it only has 2 seats. I dunno how well that would go in terms of me going on some road trips and what not.
531joshua
Right Ive just checked the insurance via gocompare and the cheapest I got was around 2800 fully comp on my own policy with no lies. Im gonna try it in terms of being on my dads policy now and see what its like. Although to be honest Id rather have my own policy to build up no claims. Ive just got a quote for an old mini 1000cc on my own policy 3rd party its 1700 - thats pushing me towards getting a mini now. With one Id also have the extra seating space and I suppose one would be easier to restore than a Spitfire
fathopper
Have you tried Footman and james for a quote? Although their policy states only 25 and over, I'm 18 and have insurance with them for mine. another way of lowering your insurance would be to join a club. In some cases it can lower your insurance quote
Hendrix
I got insured on a 71' Beetle on footman and james for well under a grand with pass plus I wasn't allowed to do LOADS of miles though. edit: go under a parents policy on something like a mini for a start. Get a couple of years with no prangs under your belt! Then it's plummet. Edited June 7, 2008 by Hendrix
531joshua
aye im going to get myself an old mini i think. ive just booked my theory test for 25th june so once thats outa the way i think ill just book my practical test. ive got my first driving lesson on monday and im gonna get insured on my mams car tomorrow. so if i keep my driving lessons tight together so like 3 - 4 per week im hoping ill be passed by the end of the school term so im on the roads through summer. while im learning to drive im thinking about getting a car, stripping it and re-building it with soem decent parts ready for when i pass. any one got any opinions on mini stuff? like how hard are they to re-store and modify? how do they handle etc? and also, what would it be like putting a bigger engine in? might do that cos i can insure it for the price of what it is in the log book but have whatever engine in the bay. fathopper
My footman and James quote was, 650.40p,I'm 18, had my license for just over 6 months, but I was with a club, it was with fully comp and breakdown cover and stuff, on my 1934 Jowett, limited milage though but since my speedo was last reading. It says 00003 and the speedo cable is broken/ on order I cant really keep track of that. but on a rough guess in 4 months ive done about 600miles. 531joshua
Ah right I see. Well Im pretty chuffed at the mo, just got insured on my dads vectra 1.8 16v for 600/year. Its 3rd party fire and theft just for while I learn to drive. Just been out for 2 hours its been great Im ok with gear changes and actually driving the car now I think I just need to improve on my manovering - Like bay / reverse parking and erm junctions are something I need to concentrate on. Hope Im passed for Summer
