Dr. Nick Riviera
End of the day. I'm not going to be an architect until I have a Masters and a RIBA Diploma, which I can only get from university. Not many people can say that for there profession. Archit..... balls.
Fat-White-Boy
I think you're kidding yourself if you think uni is the way to go for financial or job prospect or even character building reasons. The reason you go is so that you can get pissed midweek, and sleep around a bit more! *Most* career paths have a route of entry that does not require a degree. You make your choice and enjoy yourself either way! I'm sorry but i think that thats an invalid statement. University is the single biggest character building place i have ever been (depending on the way you approach it), its just like one giant network of potential friends and contacts who would be useful in later life. Its where allot of people come out of their shells and become confident in who they are and in their own abilities. I wasn't going to go to uni but then i decided to come on a whim and it was possibly the best decision I have ever made. With some careers, yes, you are right, uni will not make much of a difference in obtaining the better jobs, but still, a CV with a degree on it will be preferable to one with some GCSE's and A levels. Back on thread i work every now and again as a traffic surveyor, 100 quid a day and 5 for each person you refer to the job, long hours, but hey, 100 quid goes a long way when your a student getting pissed midweek! N.Wood
Alot of my friends from school are earning more money than i am now, they're on like £14-£16k p/a doing various jobs from mechanics to retail etc. Yeah sure they're earning more and don't have a student loan to pay back and have more expendable cash than some people. Good for them, and it seems like a good position to be in. BUT When I come out of uni I'll (hopefully) be going straight into a job earning more than they do, even with paying back my loan. I've saved about £3k of my loan from the past 2 years which may or may not have been worth doing, but hasn't affected me in many ways. Also, the ceiling on the jobs I'm looking at are £100k+, whereas many of my friends who didn't go to uni will be earning £20k p/a for the rest of their lives. Not to mention the social/networking/oppotunities you miss out on by not going to uni. Theres likely to be a bias to the discussion, with each party (students and non students) saying they're in the stronger position, but theres no way in hell I'd miss out on uni now I've experienced it, and will hopefully be in a position to be able send my kids to uni in the future.
