jay2008
On my onza t-bird I have an alex rim, don't know any more than that. When i ride normally, it makes a strange sound, sort of a metal clicking/twanging sound. That probably doesn't make much sense but its hard to describe! I know the wheel is slightly buckled and I'll be getting a new one but can anyone give me pointers to sort it just in the mean time? Is there a chance the spokes need tightening? If yes, how do I do that properly? Much grateful!
Karl Butcher
Hmm it could be you need a new alex thats what happend to mine when i had one! but you said twanging so its more likely to be your spokes my mates spokes make that sound all the time!!! if you go on Wiki you might find somthing on there to help you Edited June 4, 2008 by Karl Butcher

charlie >est<
I get a similar thing on my Echo hub. When my chain is too tight it will clunk. Try that??
jay2008
Thanks for the replies guys, I'll try the chain thing, what is the best tension to have a chain? I do know the spokes are slightly loose, some more than others.jay

jay2008
I think so, it was on the bike when my mate gave it to me. Unfortunately, he decided to leave it to rot in his garden for the best part of a year! so i'l slowly sorting it out
Mark W
If you squeeze a pair of spokes together just above where they cross, if they're loose-ish feeling, it'll be your spokes moving when the pressure is on them. Either buy a spoke key and tighten them about half a turn each, or take it to a bike shop
jay2008
Just done that, they do feel a bit loose, I do have spoke key, sorry for asking loads, so if i do one each half turn it may solve the problem? thanks for everyones advice and replies
Mark W
Do a half turn, and if they still feel loose, do another half turn. Repeat until tight When you ride it afterwards, you'll probably hear a few pings at first as the spokes settle down again, but it should quieten your wheel down after that. Simpson
Metal of your metal caliper rubbing on the rim?
jay2008
Metal of your metal caliper rubbing on the rim? Not as far as I can see!
gzus11
I used to get a noise that sounds like you describe on my old bikes. The hubs had cup/cone bearings and they made this noise if dirt got into the race, one had slight corrosion with the same noises and the last time I had it the cup had cracked all around the bearing face. I imagine cartridge bearings would behave similarly with any comtamination/corrosion As far as my experience goes the contamination caused the balls to make the noise which transfered out the spokes, similar to the noise of broken spokes. Another remedy you could try would be to strip the bearings and give them a good clean, inspect for any cracks, corrosion or dirt and carefully reassemble. jay2008
I think that sounds like a good idea, thanks mate! I'll do that and post results soon thanks to all for replies and advice, has been a help
Revolver
Whenever my wheel has made a metal twanging noise, it has been a spoke. You ought to check all your spokes are tight, and if not, tighten them!
jay2008
thanks for everyone's replies, but I have caved and just bought a cheap-ish alex to keep me riding
