Rear Wheel Sounds Strange..any Ideas

On my onza t-bird I have an alex rim, don't know any more than that. When i ride normally, it makes a strange sound, sort of a metal clicking/twanging sound. That probably doesn't make much sense but its hard to describe!

I know the wheel is slightly buckled and I'll be getting a new one but can anyone give me pointers to sort it just in the mean time? Is there a chance the spokes need tightening? If yes, how do I do that properly?

Much grateful! :D

Hmm it could be you need a new alex thats what happend to mine when i had one! :(

but you said twanging so its more likely to be your spokes

my mates spokes make that sound all the time!!! (N)

if you go on Wiki you might find somthing on there to help you :)

ive had something similar... i found one of the spokes has snapped but it had kinda stayed in place and every now and then it would catch on something and spring back make some horrible noises :P sounds stupid but it happens :)

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll try the chain thing, what is the best tension to have a chain? I do know the spokes are slightly loose, some more than others.jay

so that you can push it down a little, but so that it looks fairly tight, and doesn't dropp dramatically towards the chainstay (Y)

If you squeeze a pair of spokes together just above where they cross, if they're loose-ish feeling, it'll be your spokes moving when the pressure is on them. Either buy a spoke key and tighten them about half a turn each, or take it to a bike shop (Y)

Do a half turn, and if they still feel loose, do another half turn. Repeat until tight (Y) When you ride it afterwards, you'll probably hear a few pings at first as the spokes settle down again, but it should quieten your wheel down after that.

I used to get a noise that sounds like you describe on my old bikes.

The hubs had cup/cone bearings and they made this noise if dirt got into the race,

one had slight corrosion with the same noises and the last time I had it

the cup had cracked all around the bearing face.

I imagine cartridge bearings would behave similarly with any comtamination/corrosion

As far as my experience goes the contamination caused the balls to make the noise

which transfered out the spokes, similar to the noise of broken spokes.

Another remedy you could try would be to strip the bearings and give them a good clean,

inspect for any cracks, corrosion or dirt and carefully reassemble.
