sstein
I was wondering the same thing for the exact same reason, however I can not find anywhere that is able to do it. I've tried bike shops (loads of them) and even car mechanics. I got a tip to try car engine rebuilders as they are the most likely place to have the tools. Might try that next. Si-man
Some places charge about £5 per Helicoil. You can get a kit yourself though for roughly £20. Best off getting an engineering workshop to do it though if you aren't confident enough.
Shaun H
I live in one of the most industrial cities in the country and I couldn't find an engineering firm who could do it for me. About 1/4 of them didn't even know what a helicoil was... Just buy yourself a kit, it's a good tool to have just in case and you can charge your mates a little fee if they need to use it and make some of the money back. Heatsink
The thread repair method that riders seem to be commonly using (under the term "Helicoil") is the "Wire thread insert" type, and the bog standard version which is "Free running". More explanation here It all seems very mysterious until you've seen it done! Steve
