V-brakes Question

Hey guys,

Im thinking of going v-brake on the rear.

First of all, bit of a noob question but would it fit e.g tyre clearance?

What are your opinions on them?

Would it be a good idea because im using a smooth rim?

What set up would you recomend? (booster, adaptors, arms, lever and mainly your pad recomendation)

all help is well aperciated =]

cheers guys

..rob..

Not too sure on clearance for a mod personally, though it has been done so it's possible

The trouble with most adaptors (for this application) is that they put the brake boss about 12mm or so below the lower 4 bolt mounting point, meaning that not only do you have to run pads quite high in the runner, but the cable also crosses fairly near to the tyre.

If you knocked up a way to get the brake mounted to/closer to the lower mount, you'd get more clearance, however because of the 19" rim you've got another 12mm or therabouts to make up compared to a stock in order to clear the cable.

I have around 12mm (magic number or what?!) of clearance here, and wouldn't want any less personally - if you can get the brake mounted on the 4 bolt mount, it could well be possible though :)

In answer to your questions:

Opinions of them - I LOVE mine. So much so, in fact, that I'm currently looking to stick another one on the front! Like anything it's down to personal preference though, and when set up properly, vees, maguras and discs can all be amazing. Have a go on a few bikes with different setups and see if you like them

Smooth rims - Much like a magura, running a vee on a smooth rim will result in lower wet-weather performance than on a grind, but in the dry can be phenominal. As you might expect, you'll need to get the right pads on there

Setup - I'm running Avid Ultimate arms with an SD7 lever, linear slic outer and cheap random inner on my Echo Control frame. It's an '04 frame, so doesn't have any in-built booster like the newer ones, yet I don't feel it needs a booster on there at all. I'm also running a set of Heatsink V2 adaptors (which are brilliant, I'd highly recommend them) and Heatsink CNC backings (with rock material until my Heatsink Reds come through) :)

I use a silly light grind, and find the brake ridiculously good - so much so I'm ideally going to get the same setup on the front!

I had a V on the back for a while, and to be honest, it was a pain in the ass.

Tyre clearence was fine with the adapters I made, but they had to sit slightly higher than the Heatsink ones.

I started breaking springs, and the plates the springs sit in for adjustment. Had to have the wheel sat right at the end of the dropouts so it just about cleared the cable between caliper arms. Just about got by, and my tyre was enar enough slic!

Soon enough went back to a Magura, and i'm happy with it now. Feels nicer, needs a lot less fiddling.

Vee's are definatly less stressful than maggies :)

I run SD7 lever,

Clarkes Cable,

Ultimate Arms,

CNC'd Plaz (although you should get rock greens for a smooth),

Onza V-daptors,

RB booster (mounted under neath the 4-bolt mounts).

EDIT: Mine used to rub on the tyre, but then I mounted the booster under-neath, and it raised the whole brake up about 1cm which means it no longer rubs - and its really stiff now :D
