Robwalker
You'll be ill for days, have dioreah (sp) and it wount be a very pleasnt experience. Do it properly, not worth the risk
Tomm
I've never used mine with loads of proper mould, only a little bit. I doubt it'll kill you or even make you ill, but it doesn't taste too nice. I've only ever bothered using boiling hot water (straight out of the kettle) and run it through a bit. Then you can kinda roll the tube between your fingers and the sludge will come off. Watch out cos it gets hot (obviously). Or you could buy some sterilisation tablets from somewhere if you're paranoid.
Danny
As tom said go get some sterilisation tablets from a chemist and run them through it.
James-M
Concentrated Hydrochloric Acid. Downside - Could result is loss of CamelBack Tube... Leave to soak with hot water might just do the trick. It has for me before...

JD™
hot water will be fine, using anything else will make it cleaner than the stuff coming through your tap, and whats the point in that when you're going to be putting tap water in it? Fishy
If you have an ex-army shop near you get some purification tablets, they work the shiz. Or bicarbonate of soda with hot water, flush it through a few times.
JT!
There's no rush anymore now, got to my MTB and the rear brake is f**ked so wont be going anywhere.Flushed hot water through it but the black shitty mould is still there. Can't get anything down there to clean it out.
Fishy
Use a hose or pressure washer if it's a right b*****d to get out, then let it soak in some hot water with bicarb in.
dan_addison
Hot water and the camelback tablets will be the onlything that'll work really. Hot water usually does the trick. How long has the mould been there??
JT!
It's really hard to shift. I tried to pushing down some old rag with an old brake cable and that didn't get rid of any of it.
haydon_peter
My Camelbak got mould in the tube once and all I did was blast it through with water then push some kitchen roll through it using the earth of some stripped cable. I expect the outer of a of a brake/gear cable would work? Or a coat hanger? For cleaning get some baby bottle sterilisation tablets from Boots. Si-man
Soak the bag in bleach for an hour or so with hot water.Rinse with clean hot water. Stick in a bowl with hot water with bicarb of soda for an hourAnother bowl of hot water.Get yourself some bendy pipe cleaner from a shop, like craft shops etc. Needs to be about 2 ft longI use the camelbak brushes and the above method, makes it nice and fresh
Sam F
You can get them fluffy wire things for art and that.. i reckon that would do the trick. With hot water and shizzle ofc. Edited May 7, 2008 by Sam Fenchurch
balfa
To avoid having to do this I just shove the bladder in the freezer after a ride. Stops any crap growing and i don't need to dry or clean it. Got to be careful when you take it out though as it'll be a bit more brittle and susceptible to punctures.
Matthew62
I've got a Dakine version of the camelback hydration system and i always get a build up of black tar like residue. I cleaned mine out the night before a big ride (so all shops were closed) and i had to get it clean that night. I just found as much hot water as i could use, and the only way i could properly get it out was to suck it out then spit it out. Not nice but it was all that would work. I must get some of the proper stuff..............
Rusevelt
As tom said go get some sterilisation tablets from a chemist and run them through it.Sterilisation fuild (from Poundland stores or local supermarket) and carbonated water. pour the sterile liquid in first, then the water. the fizzing action of the water fizzes away the mould and residue from the surface. Caleb
seems a lot of hassle just for a drink, they don't even hold much liquid either way. its not as if you're racing and don't have time to stop to take a bottle out of your bag? Gavyn.
seems a lot of hassle just for a drink, they don't even hold much liquid either way. its not as if you're racing and don't have time to stop to take a bottle out of your bag?it's a pain in the ass having to stop though, do you ride much xc/downhill/mtbing? for me i start off the first mile or 2 are quite boring then i get in the flow and that carries me for the next 10/20/30 miles if i stop i lose that and it makes the next couple of miles difficult. In downhill if I'm pushing up after a run I'll be having a drink while pushing without having to stop. mine holds 2 litres which is enough, if I'm going far then i'll fill it up in a decent moving stream. you can drink little and often aswell which is better for you than glugging half a litre every couple of miles. They aren't a real hassle if you use the right cleaning equipment.
JT!
Plus bottles are uncomfortable as f**k.
Matthew62
Mine holds 3 litres and i wouldn't be without it. Sure sometimes i even stop and drink from it which seems silly, but its the convenience which is awesome. I can sit on my bike, not have to get my bag off my back, route around for a bottle then put it back etc...... they're awesome.Of course they're a hassle, but we're trials riders, its not exaclty BMX where you can smash around a bike to bits, they need care and attention so im sure most of us are used to a bit of fuss and hassle. Also cleaning out a bag isn't really that big an issue in the grand scheme of things. Hydro packs are comfortable, convenient and always there.Bottles are annoying - i wouldn't go back to them - especially those god awful ones mounted to your frame. Si-man
They are also good on motorbikes etc. Dont have to stop all the time to have a drink.
Tomm
If you use them often, then camelbaks are probably less hassle than any other option. I use mine every week and all I ever do is fill it up before I go out. I don't even take the bladder out of the bag to do that...They only go manky if you leave them for a few weeks, and even when they do it's a 10 minute job to sort it
