Cones!

Recommended Posts

Well your obviously not tightening them up correctly, the cones have two nuts which should tight up against each other. So tighten your cones up to where you want it then tighten the other nut against it to prevent it from coming loose.

Sorted yet??

I'll explain a little more. Each side has 2 nuts on. One being the cone and the other the locking nut. The cones need to tighten up into the bearings enough so the wheel doesn't move about, but only rolls smoothly on the bearings. Therefore this should be hand tight.

Then you need a cone spanner. At about £4 they're not expensive. Use that cone spanner (on the cone) and another spanner on the lock nut then tighten together.

Now the other side. Try and keep the cone tightened enough against them bearings before you lock the cone nut up against the lock nut.

If the bearings feel unsmooth, add some more grease for quick releaf on the bearings or take the bearings out and clean them all then add some fresh grease.

need a little help with my cones on my rear wheel. every time i tighten them about half an hour later they come loose, so when i ride along it rubs on the pads.

any suggestions?

yea loctites good but only tighten them up untill there is no play. if you overtightn them the bearings will not move smoothly.

and dont bother with a cone spanner, a normal adjustable works out just fine , i find.

sorry about the stupid question in advance.........

I dont have grips for tightening up cones. They are just circles...

Im running sealed hubs, does that mean I dont need to tighten them up?

Or does it mean I have to take them apart to actually tighten up the cones.

could someone explain please
