robster
I am building a new bike up for Robbie over the next few weeks, the Hydroxx is simply just to much for him at his size.I do belive that all of this saving a bit here and there is a waste of time for most riders, however when you are 10 years old and 5 stone you need all the help you can get and bike strength is not as much an issue at the moment. What I would like to do is build something as light as his old Wasp, about 7.5kg. nice and short but with a full size back wheel in it. I would like some good ideas from all of you techi types out there as to how and what to use to make a really light bike for him. I have the frame but I don't want to let that out yet, drilling and cutting has started on the frame allready. All ideas welcome and remember there is no such thing as a stupid idea, go on have a bit of fun with this one and run with it.Thanks in advance,JP. Muel
Dob frame + Fork.Try-All H hubs on Dob rims.Whats brakes does he want? Dual disc or disc/hs33?Monty TI cranks, he will be fine with them.TI Bar and stem, possibly a shorter stem? For the freewheel I'd get a Tensile, they are very cheap and work brilliantly, mine is over 1 year and 6 months old.Lightweight chain, as he is small enough not to snap it.Wellago MG-1 Magnesium pedals, they are pretty expensive but they do save a fair bit. (Echos, Onza hognesiums are all Wellago MG-1s).Your best bet is probably to ring up Adam at TartyBikes,as he has a lot of experience saving weight and will be able to tell you which direction to go in. BenLeacockâ„¢
don't let ali C hear that...!vees are certainly no worse than maguras in comps..I was under the impression a wet vee = die ? Like no bite, hold or anything ?
Bionic Balls
i'd say the hold on a vee is always more than a magura with the same setup...they go like maguras do...a bit...less good...! a grind is the answer..as with maguras
The Duck
I have a bit of a love hate relationship with vees. Hold is pretty shit hot, but bite suxxx. Also your grind needs to be mega sharp for it to work well. I got shot of mine, very happy with maguras again now.

The Duck
thanks lads, frame change not an option. So this DOB thing (whatever they are is not an option)JPOk, defo DOB rims if hes going to be running disks. They grind up badly though but as hes so light it might not matter an awful lot?

Also your grind needs to be mega sharp for it to work well. I got shot of mine, very happy with maguras again now.My front vee is nuts! I'm still on the same grind with Plaz CRVs.Anyhoo, i'm guessing not too much money is wanting to be spent? I also think he has a strong advantage over us for weight saving due to his lightness as well. So titanium parts out of the question then?Alloy bolts and nipples ALL round, goes without saying. But unless you do everything it's not worth it i'd say.Radial lacing for rim brake. Radial on non-drive side of rear.Shorter parts; bars, stem, cranks etc. As he is small anyway, put performance over weight though.See if you can pull off a smaller gear. Like 16t freewheel up front? He has less leg power... Maybe a light rear freehub 10t with 15t fixed up front with no bash? Also means less chain..KMC Kool SL. Obvious?Non painted/ finished parts. Then just lighter parts. ogre
why you listing specs, buy a dremel. remove metal from the botom bracket yoke, the seat tube, the headtube + you could probably get away with a bit of toptube remember, circles + rounded edges = less stress.make the holes in rims wider, or square remove some sidewalldrill the cranks.remove the paint from the framedrill/cut down the bash ring/platedrill the pedalsTI axlesfile the magura mounts off if you use a diskdrill brake leversmake the rims singlewallalloy bolts + nipples
