easy...

decide on something you like doing

look in the ucas directory for uni's that do your course

find which ones have grades you can achieve

order them by location you would like to live in

order them by the uni you would consider going to

order them by the reputation of the uni for that course

apply to the ones you like/would like to get in to through ucas by filling out a pile of forms

wait for offers / interviews / complete your course

accept / reject offers

sort out accomodation for uni and when u start

go to uni

I would strongly reccommend doing a degree that is worth something if you are after a good job. With the fee's being as high as ever I wouldnt waste my time doing a 'mickey-mouse degree' (Wont mention any incase I cause offense!). Electronic engineering for the win =P

Seems like good advice.

Don't base your decision on how the place 'sounds' though, I put down Aberystwyth as my last choice (honestly, it does sound boring as ****), but after having been to plymouth (sp), northhampton, coventy, southhampton and some other place I can't remember, it was pretty obvious that Aber kicked all their asses. It helped that it was the only university that included going to the union for a pint in their tour.

Equally, not everyone is the same.

Reccomendations are good, but you need to ask whats best for YOU.

With any luck, one uni that you visit (and visit as many as you can!) will stand out - for Tom that was Aberwhatsit, for me it was Plymouth.

I knew i didn't want to go north of about Oxford, so my search was along the south coast, from Brighton to Falmouth (Cornwall) and ended up in Plymouth.

If you're doing photography type stuff, maybe concentrate on the well known London universitys?

Very true, I wasn't trying to say don't go here, here or here - just giving an example, it will be different for everyone :) My plan was probably the opposite to yours, to at get far away, at least out of Wales, didn't work too well.

Isn't every subject at Wolverhampton Uni "micky mouse" :P

Only kidding, seriously though, make sure your degree is actually worth doing (or that your parents are big enough mugs to pay for it). REALLY think about the job prospects afterwards, £20k of debt is not a fun thing to pay off if you're earning shit all after you graduate.

What kind of course you looking to do Dave?

did you take advantage of the cheaper fees too? and the grant for welsh students studying in wales?

Uni's good fun, but hard work dave. Depending on the course you do, depends on how many hours a week you do, and how indepth the uni teaches it. EG my course is 21 hours a week, geology is about 6 hours a week :P

Ucas is usually the start though. But follow the step by steps above for a better idea :)

Word, and 6 hours a week teaching may sound better than 21, but it means you have to do all the work yourself, rather then being taught it.

Alot of courses are 'babyfed' and are provided the majority of the material to learn, other you have to get out there and do it yourself.

My business degree has about 10 hours a week teaching, that's lectures and seminars, sometimes less actually.

I'd much rather I have more days in Uni and then I'll know the course better and obviously pass although this year's easy peasy so far I think :)

yea, at the end of the day, all the places your lookin at, will have a fair few students there, so its not like you think"abers crap, its quiet", theres still a bunch of students going there, a bunch of student nights out, and a load of people to get drunk with, and shag, which is pretty much wat the social side of uni consists off. so going to say manchester, london, or the like purely for the social side, isn't really worth it.

Because it costs different amounts to go to different unis to do different courses :P

I'm on a 4 year course at Bristol, and was the year that got lumped with 3k tuition fees:

£3000 pa fees

£3000 pa (roughly) accommodation - places like London will be more, places like Cardiff will be less

That's £6000 a year, before any other costs like food etc, so on a 4 year course is sticking me in £24000 debt by the end of my degree

Add in £2000 pa food and drink, travel, social etc (bike stuff, holiday etc if you decide to do anything like that) or so, and it's over £30k, however at somewhere which is less expensive, and if you sneak under the £3k fees, it's not so bad

Just finishing my last year of Uni, and total costs...... up to around £20000 ,probably more. Doesn't bare thinking about too much. And that was paying the £1250 tuition fees, with it now being £3000....well you can do the math. Big money, and if you were to ask me 'has it been worth it'...... for what i've learned through Uni and gained i would say NO. With the time taken to do Uni and the things i've taught myself and the way in which i have personally grown, i would say its been invaluable. But i could have done that in my own time without spending £20000+

These days Uni is a massive decision, but make one thing very clear before you go!!

Uni is an industry that is not set up for you. it is in place to make money - nothing more. You are a number and a means of them acquiring money, that is why they want you. There is no real peronal invested interest in to you as an individual.

I am hosting an exhibition in the coming weeks of all my work, and yesterday i lost a case with the manager of marketing from Nottingham trent Uni about the display of my work. I wanted to display a piece of graphics i had created for the show, involving some characters i had created that went a long with my project and they have been disallowed due to the exhibition needing a uniform look - therefore an individual piece that is likely to stand out from the crown has been disallowed as it will detract from the show on the whole.

How rediculous is that on an arts based course, that we all have to fit in with one another, that indivudals have tpo lpay down their creative talents as not to detracts from others work.

That is the reality of Uni, the decision can only be made by you!

roughly how much has ur uni experiances cost you?

i hear different figures?

For me, I was before topup fees, so £1200 for tuition, but bump that to 3k.

First year housing was about £2700

Second year was about £2000

Third year about £3000

Bills are around £20 a month each, for gas and electricity, but come every three months, food shopping you're looking at about £40 a month, can go less depending on what you buy, if you dont treat yourself and dont eat loads you can survive on less (I usually eat 1 or 2 meals a day, and usually raw ingredients to make stuff myself so it works out a lot cheaper).

Over the three years you're now looking at about £20k, whereas for me it's worked out about £12k :)

Yeah, same situation but hopefully the piece of paper I'm paying for will get me at least a first interview at places which otherwise I wouldn't get.

Then my interview can show them about me which should be enough!!

I'm paying £3100 this year and it averages at £3400 for the next two. Luckily enough my rents are paying for my Accom so I'll only be in £10k of debt, plus £1k for my placement year taking it to £11, plus my placement year expenses which will be A LOT.

:(

My fees for next year are £3,145...

However, my parents said that, depending on financial situation when I leave, they will do their best to pay that part of my debt off (which will be just under half I think).

Makes me feel VERY lucky and it's a great idea on their part rather than paying for accomodation, cos I can't piss away my maintenance loan like most of the people in that situation do. WIN. :)

Oh and paid placement years F.T.M.F.W.

But I've kinda said I'd like to have some fun that year, so that may or may not get spent on silly things like TVs and consoles etc :P

So yeah... Uni... expensive shit.

Year after next I wouldn't be surprised if the max fees reach £3,250.

Feckin ridiculous..........

First year:

Tuition fees: £3,000

Maintenance loan: £6,600

Assembly grant: -£750

LSBU bursary: -£500

Second year:

Tuition fees: £3,000

Maintenance loan: £6,600

Assembly grant: -£750

LSBU bursary: £0 (For some reason, should've been £750 :()

Gotta <3 uni in London. Oh, and with the interest that builds up, it's probably over £20k already. I don't have an overdraft though, which is the main thing I wanted to avoid. I don't really mind owing the SLC money, but banks tend to be a lot more hardcore when it comes to getting their £'s back.

Gonna have to look in to the course much more, as ive no idea what they would have me doing in fashion photography, i presume the obvious but if i got there and they started asking me to make dresses id be a bit miffed.

I'd imagine you'd need to know a lot about the history of fashion photography (e.g. famous photographers, pioneering photographers), lighting setups, a brief history of fashion in general, etc. - as it's a specialised course, you'd need to demonstrate a lot of knowledge about the subject field. If you don't, I'd just stick with a normal/digital photography course.
