Luke Rainbird
Hammer and screwdriver is the norm, ideally with a vice/bits of wood - assuming you mean the bit on the fork?
Mat Smith!
Side it on, hit it with a hammer and some sort of scew driver / allen key or something.Matx
Dan6061
I use a spanner than just fits the steerur tube, then hit it with a hammer.
Danny Kearns
Ive found crown races dont fit on the 07 forks because they get wider around the bottom ?

Mark W
If you've got an adjustable, open it up 'til it fits around the steerer and touches the top of crown race. Then, just tap it down, moving the spanner around so you're hitting it down on each bit, not just pushing one side down, then trying to push the other half down, or whatever. Tomm
I just use a screwdriver. As long as it's vaguely in the right place it'll press itself on when you ride the bike and then you just need to tighten the headset a bit more Ive found crown races dont fit on the 07 forks because they get wider around the bottom ?Er, you mean that little shoulder on the steerer tube? It's supposed to be like that, it holds the race on.
Ben John-Hynes
I just use a screwdriver. It's supposed to be like that, it holds the race on.So could i ride it with around 6mm between the fork crown and the race? And it'll get pushed down as i ride? And yea, i thought that there was a difference is width of the "shoulder" between my echos and zoos. Mark W
Grease + bigger spanner = win
psycholist
I've got a block of wood that I drilled a hole slightly bigger than the steerer tube through. I slide the crown race on first, then the block of wood and then hit the wood each side of the steerer with a hammer to seat the crown race... Sam F
Just get it fairly down and then put your forks on and just tighten the bolt and it will push itself down.. it works i do it
Ben John-Hynes
Ok, thanks.I'll whack the forks on and see if it pushes down,
Danny Kearns
This gonna sound proper noobish.Which side of the crown race should be facing towards the bottom of the headset ?
Tom_
If you have a gas cooker, get one of the rings going, hold the race with some pliers or somthing in the flame for a while, then once its heated up just drop it on, if you heated it for long enough it should have expanded enough to slide allll the way down. Mat Smith!
This gonna sound proper noobish.Which side of the crown race should be facing towards the bottom of the headset ?the wider bit to the bottom, the smaller bit into your headset, if that makes sence? lol.Matx
Mark W
Yeah, the bottom bit will be larger, and it'll have a profile roughly like this:__/ gap \__Sort of. Basically, the bit with the profiled face to it (That'll sit inside your bearings) needs to be on the top, the big wide flat side goes on the bottom. Ben John-Hynes
__/ gap \__That diagram is in a world of it's own!lol
max-t
Just get it fairly down and then put your forks on and just tighten the bolt and it will push itself down.. it works i do it Exactly. Easiest way to do it, none of this bashing shit. Good job i spotted it really wasn't it
Mark W
If you're doing it that way, make sure you take your forks off after a ride or two to double check the crown race is actually seated properly flat on the forks. It can be a mission getting it totally level, especially if you're doing it just by tightening the headset up.

Fixed Pantsâ„¢
Dunno if it's been mentioned, but use your stem as a slide hammer, works wonders.
steve@banbury-trials
So could i ride it with around 6mm between the fork crown and the race? And it'll get pushed down as i ride?i did that as the bottom of the steerer was wider than the top and the race got stuck, took a couple of weaks for it to drop all the way down so i reccommend doing some big-ass stock moves in brum today to knock the race down . CarryingWolf
Hammer is key.one race in, loose, block of wood under, another ontop of the steerer tube, bosh the wood untill its flush (keep going) then repeat it for the other one.job done, never actually used a headset press, but this always works. if its going in a little squiff, just bash the other side untill its flush.
