weejohn20
ye! making it grip does make sence as the tyre can fold more over an object, i think maxxis would probably do it allready if it SO much better although i must say that if it is normal and you want to cut them off it is easy enough and if you prefer to have them on then it saves u changing it so maybe the companys have thought of it before but realised some people would prefer to keep their knobs! Mark W
In fairness, people have always given a shit about how their bike looks/how light it is. I can remember similar "How can I make my bike lighter?" posts from when I first joined back in 2000-2001.

nicky w
Waste of a good tyre and money!40 grams makes no difference to how good you ride it means your tyre has less grip. That’s just my opinion not what I would do to mine.nicky. Muel
It saves about 40g. You can feel if you loose 100g from your bike, and as they say, it all adds up. This is just the next level of removing material to make the bike lighter.
weejohn20
i don't think the point was about the weight saving, i think it was about how it can benefit your grip when landing on the edge of an object which i am sure everyone does here *lol* so stop going on about weight.. its about grip, some one just added that it saves weight as well which it does but thats not the point. c.j
tyres are like that for a reason, i would of thought having more knobbles would mean better grip for walls and stuff, especially considering how trials tyres are generally a lower psi plus how much do you eat? because that is more weight, im not gonna starve for weight loss on my bike

Saved me 130g and it grips better on edges and mud = Win.tyres are like that for a reason, i would of thought having more knobbles would mean better grip for walls and stuff, especially considering how trials tyres are generally a lower psi plus how much do you eat? because that is more weight, im not gonna starve for weight loss on my bike How does eating make any difference to the weight of your bike? Luke Rainbird
You can move a bike around more easily if it's lighter, it doesn't matter how heavy you are in that respect. An 8kg bike for a 75kg rider will feel far different than a 15kg bike ridden by a 68kg rider, for exampleThere's a slight rider:bike ratio thing going on really, higher the ratio, the easier things seem to be as a general rule
Scott Norman
I did that on the dj on sunday. saved me about 70 grams lol ...Scott

Gandalf the Yellow
why do people do that, you buy tyres for grip, if its not the weight you want then look for another tyre... you cut the treads off if means lower grip.... so you're just cutting money away..i do it on the left side of my rear tyre purely because the dob frames have crap yoke clearance and its a bitch to not rub either side.. not to save weight.AND. i weighed the bike and it made absolutely no difference.steve
Krisboats
Patt cut every alternative knob off the outside knobs on his tyres and he says the difference in grip is really noticeable, with it being much better now the knobs are removed. AdamR28
*Ali C on Adams account*I have been cutting my tyres for a while now.Not only does it nearly save 100g per tyre, is really does increase grip! Its noticeable thats for sure.To the people saying its a waste of time, I wouldn't make up your mind just yet. Maxxis 26" tyres are designed for rotating grip while downhilling (even the hansventure is an all round xc/dh/freeride tyre), trials puts a whole different strain on a tyre and cutting them makes them better at the job I want them to do.
