chrisTrial-arg
Everything surged from something I heard that happened at the koxx days 2008...It appears that in one of those days (Saturday) Gilles Coustellier cut out the knobs of his tires, Vincent saw Coustellier's tires on Sunday and he did the same thing on that daySo I decided to do the same… Edited April 13, 2008 by chrisTrial-arg

Hendrix
Aren't you just going to fall on your head because you've cut off your grip?
The Duck
*Cough numpty cough*Actually no, it does have other benefits. I've done it to my tyres too, apart from saving weight (its saves hardly any though), they tyres shed mud more efficiently and also (I'm taking bessell's word for this) they grip better. I couldn't tell you if they grip better or not because I swapped from Schwalbe to a Maxxis, hacked away at the Maxxis before I'd even ridden it. But what i can tell you its that it grips very well how it is.Edit: Did you actually cut off all the nobs on your rear tyre? If so, the word used to describe you above was probably accurate. They cut every other nob on the outside rows of their rear tyres. Any more than that and you must have a death wish. I think Giacomo Coustellier might have cut all the tread off his front tyre (bit daft IMO) Edited April 13, 2008 by Quackers!!
austen
You must have been pretty bored to sit there cutting them off. That must have taken absolute ages!they grip better i cant see that being true

1337 Trials
Crazy man! Don't think ile be doing this. haha. Wouldn't the extra tread help to get up walls etc (grip the edge) ~Matty

steve@banbury-trials
i removed some tread from my maxxis hansventre as the tyre seemed to me a dog poo magnet ,once i had removed some of the tread it wasnt.i've also removed everyother block from the side tread on my front highroller.maybe christrial-arg has taken too much tread of ,but surely he is only experiamenting and theres nowt wrong in that.steve
otaylor38
if they gve better gripthen, well, why arent they manufactured like that??
Revolver
the only way it could offer more grip is the same way slick tyres grip better than knobbly tyres. Only thing is, they need to be warm and normally slick tyres aren't used for going up walls, where they might slip. Also, roads and what-have-you are smoother surfaces with less stuff to contaminate the rubber.I'm keeping my knobs...er, tyre tread.
froob
if they gve better gripthen, well, why arent they manufactured like that??Because companies like Maxxis don't make trials tires, they make downhill tires.the only way it could offer more grip is the same way slick tyres grip better than knobbly tyres. If there are a few less knobs then an edge of a knob can grip the edge of something better. Otherwise its like having a nearly slick tire on the edge. Token
Don't Stan an Ali C do this aswell? Remember Adam saying something about it, being more grippy apparently because the tire can fold over an pinch the corners of objects easier.
